FOOTBALL: A Couple Of Early Things To Look For In Practice

BIG RAPIDS - OK, it's still early as Ferris State University is just one practice into its football season, but excitement already is back.

It was good to be on Top Taggart Field watching a few minutes of football practice (the first of the season) Friday morning. Sure, there were no pads on the players, but it's still the start of football season and weeks from the start of Ferris State University's 101st season of Bulldog Football.

Although Ferris is one practice into its preseason, here are a couple of early thoughts followers and fans of the Bulldogs can think about in the days and weeks to come:

1. How is the offense going to react to being the experienced unit this season that will carry a large chunk of responsibility in the upcoming season?

This fall, with a pair of experienced quarterbacks (Kyle Parrish and Tom Schneider), a line that has gained experience and a sizable group of receivers (like Seth Hubbard, Mike Ryan, Damien Miller, Chris Wilson and others) who have had a year to mature, the offense is a group that should be ready to take a big step forward. It will be a challenge competing without ace slot receiver/running back Tim Hogue, who no longer is a member of the team. The Bulldogs have young guys (like David Freeman (pictured right) and David Johnson) behind Hogue and now have a golden opportunity. If this group is able to build off last fall's experience, and a solid spring campaign, Ferris could be in good shape in terms of putting some points on the scoreboard.

2. Defensively, who are the team leaders ready to step forward to lead a defense that graduated a number of experienced student-athletes from 2008?

The Bulldogs may not have a ton of guys returning on defense with significant game experience, but they do have some veteran student-athletes returning who have been in the program for a few years such as Nick Butler, Angelo Williams, Santino Favot (pictured right), Kyle Fitzpatrick, Chad Wilson, Kory Deering, Jacob Moreno, Joe Morrow and others are poised snatch up key spots for Ferris. It's good to know these guys have been in the program for a few years and understand Bulldog football. With open spots on the depth chart, it's reasonable to expect serious competition. This preseason should be fun to watch, from a competition standpoint , as guys battle for spots on the depth chart or to move up the depth chart.

Time will tell how things play off during this important preseason.

The Bulldogs are back on the field Saturday morning (Aug. 8) for an early practice.
