FOOTBALL: Grand Rapids Press Writer Howie Beardsley's Story On Jake Visser

BIG RAPIDS - Former Ferris State University All-American defensive tackle Jake Visser made a strong run at becoming a member of the National Football League's Houston Texans. But, it appears the Coopersville native's NFL dreams have hit a bump in the road. Only time will tell if this is a temporary bump or the gateway to the next phase of his life - life after playing college football.

Grand Rapids Press sports writer Howie Beardsley caught up with Jake.

Here is an excerpt from Howie's Grand Rapids Press story:
Most NFL training camps are only a week old. But already, defensive tackle Jake Visser of Coopersville finds himself in a holding pattern.

Visser, a two-time NCAA Division II All-American and Academic All-American from Ferris State, was cut by the Houston Texans this week.

The 2008-09 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Male Student-Athlete of the Year now sits and waits.

"I looked at this as an opportunity to give myself a shot at playing professional football, but getting released and going back to the square-one waiting game is not one of those things you hope for," Visser said Friday night while driving home from Houston.

"At the same time, I do have a backup plan. I can still get picked up by another team, or get back together with the Texans if they have injury problems on the defensive line. I just don't know if any of those situations will happen.

"Whatever happens, my ultimate goal was to someday be a teacher. But, hopefully, later than sooner."
Jake Visser is a great kid, one of the brightest stars ever to wear the crimson and gold colors of Ferris State University. Good things happen to good people and Jake Visser is good people - as the saying goes.
Jake has his priorities in order and he will land on his feet whether it's in the NFL or through educating and coaching young people.
