BIG RAPIDS - Grand Valley State defensive end Danny Richard swept in for a sack on fourth down with just 1:51 remaining in the game.

And finally, his team, the nation's top-ranked Division II football team, had a little breathing room.

Ferris State, the just-north neighbor and rival, pushed Grand Valley to the edge of an upset, but the unbeaten Lakers held on for a 17-10 win in front of 4,290 people at Top Taggert Field on Saturday night.

"It was a great win," Grand Valley coach Chuck Martin said. "I know everybody is going to question it, and our fans will be mad, but we played hard, we stayed the course."Ferris State (1-3) didn't look like the Bulldogs who lost 43-7 to Findlay last week, and Martin said the Lakers were not surprised."We talked about Ferris," he said. "We told them, 'They have a lot of pride. They are going to bounce back. They are not going to play that way again.' "
