FOOTBALL: Elsewhere Around The GLIAC

BIG RAPIDS - This past weekend was the first full week of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action for teams around the league.

There were a number of good match-ups that lived up to the billing including the battle between Hillsdale and Michigan Tech and the game between Saginaw Valley and Wayne State.

Here are the results and some thoughts:

Thursday: Sept. 3
GAME:
35 Findlay
13 Tiffin
Final
Boxscore Recap

THOUGHTS: Not a big surprise with this result. Findlay has a solid all-around team. The Oilers are not going to contend for the championship, but Findlay is among a number of teams that can finish in the top half of the conference if it can continue to play well and protect its home field (and maybe steal one or two on the road). It's going to be a tough year for Tiffin.

Saturday: Sept. 5
GAME:
35 Michigan Tech
37 Hillsdale
Final
Boxscore Recap

THOUGHTS: This was perhaps the game of the weekend. A lot of us thought it would play out that way and it seems as though it did. Hillsdale did what it had to do to come away with a win in a battle of well-coached teams that execute their game plans so well. In this game, two of the better teams in the GLIAC were in a battle. A lot of people do not know how good a team Hillsdale is this season. Tech had some national recognition in the preseason, but this win might help get Hillsdale a much-deserved mention among the nation's best.

GAME:
21 Northern Mich.
23 Northwood (Mich.)
Final
Boxscore Recap

THOUGHTS: This had all the makings of a close game. I liked Northwood slightly only because it was the home team. But, it appears Northern competed hard as you would expect from Bernie Anderson-coached teams. Good and competitive battle between these teams.

GAME:
21 Saginaw Valley
13 Wayne St. (Mich.)
Final
Boxscore Recap

THOUGHTS: This was expected to be the other close game of the weekend and it pretty much played out that way. In this game, I went against the home team in favor of Saginaw Valley's balance and proven success already this season on the road. Wayne State will be good this season, but it looks like Saginaw Valley, Hillsdale and Ashland are battling for who will be the next best team behind Grand Valley.

GAME:
26 Grand Valley St.
10 Indianapolis
Final
Boxscore Recap

THOUGHTS: There was very little intrigue involving this game as no one expected Indianapolis to threaten Grand Valley in this contest. There were some bumps in the road for the Lakers, but not much to cause any fear. Grand Valley is, quite simply, far too powerful.

GAME:
44 Ashland
23 Ferris St.
Final
Boxscore Recap

THOUGHTS: Ashland served notice that it is not ready to give up its spot as the No. 2 teams in the GLIAC and still hopes for a shot to prove it can maybe be No. 1 (although that is a long shot for any team in the GLIAC to knock off Grand Valley). Ashland's offense was strong and smooth with the running game and the passing game. The Bulldogs had few answers for stopping or slowing the Eagles' powerful offense in Saturday's game.
