FOOTBALL: Ferris Needs An Inspired Effort

BIG RAPIDS - No. 1 Grand Valley State University is a heavy favorite coming into this today's Anchor-Bone Classic at Ferris State University.

The Bulldogs, as a team, have to muster a great effort and play hard from start to finish against what is easily the best team they will see all season.

Fans of the crimson and gold will be watching to see how this team responds from last week's devastating 43-7 defeat at Findlay. That was a game the Bulldogs needed to get heading into this game against the Lakers. Having lost that game, however, Ferris now is at an early crossroads in its season with GVSU in town and rolling with already two big wins against nationally-ranked teams under its belt (West Texas A&M and Saginaw Valley State).

We know the Bulldogs will come into this game playing to win. As competitive student-athletes, that is precisely the way the Ferris players should approach this game - in spite of the fact the Bulldogs have not beaten the Lakers since 1999 (when current FSU offensive coordinator Matt McCarthy was the starting quarterback).

For me, watching this game will be less about watching the scoreboard and more about watching how the Bulldogs respond to the adversity of the last seven days (beginning with that painful loss at Findlay last Saturday).

It's still a long season and this team has to pull back together, shake off the adversity and push ahead.
