VOLLEYBALL: Ferris Falls Just Short To Rival Grand Valley

BIG RAPIDS - Ferris State University put up a valiant fight, particularly late, but in the end it was Grand Valley State University which escaped Ewigleben Sports Arena with a hard-fought five-set win over the Bulldogs.

The Lakers own that match 26-24, 22-25, 25-22, 22-25, 15-13 to improve to 6-5 overall and tie the Bulldogs at 2-1 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Ferris drops to 9-4 overall this season with the narrow setback to its traditional West Michigan rival. Grand Valley had been struggling a bit (by its high standard), but came out and competed hard on the road against a Ferris team that had been playing well.

For the Bulldogs, Katie Edwards had a strong match as she finished with 19 kills with a hitting percentage of .295. Arielle Goodson enjoyed a hitting percentage of .275 as she tallied 16 kills. Kristy Gilchrist had 12 kills while Sarah Lark added 11. Setter Samantha Fordyce finished with 63 assists.

Defensively, Ashley Huntey had 23 digs while Lisa Tobiczyk had 20.

Whitney Tremain led the Lakers with 14 kills while Rebeccah Rapin added 13.

The competition gets no easier for the Bulldogs as they now travel to the Upper Peninsula to take on Michigan Tech (Sept. 18) at 7 p.m. and then Northern Michigan (Sept. 19) at 3 p.m.

One thing we've seen early is that the GLIAC is a tough league and a balanced volleyball league. There will be a lot of highs and lows this season.

The standings could change weekend to weekend.

So, stay informed.
