VOLLEYBALL: Ferris Starts GLIAC Off In Strong Fashion

BIG RAPIDS - Starting the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference season has been a very positive thing for Ferris State University's volleyball team.

The Bulldogs now are 9-3 on the season after sweeping weekend matches with a 3-2 win over Wayne State, Friday, and Northwood on Saturday with a 3-0 victory.

This is merely the beginning and not really a time for any kind of extensive celebration. Coming to Big Rapids on Tuesday is nationally-ranked Grand Valley State for a 7 p.m. contest in Ewigleben Sports Arena.

The early-week match with the Lakers is just a start of things as the Bulldogs then head to the Upper Peninsula to take on Michigan Tech (Sept. 18) and Northern Michigan (Sept. 19). It will be quite the busy and challenging schedule this week for the Bulldogs.

Against Wayne, Katie Edwards led with 16 kills, Arielle Goodson (pictured) had 15, Kristy Gilchrist had 14 and with 10 apiece were Ashley Huntey and Sarah Lark. Samantha Fordyce had 56 assists.

Defensively, Lisa Tobiczyk had 24 digs, Huntey had 14 and Dana Ruttle added 10.

Ferris won 15-13 in the fifth set.

Against Northwood, Gilchrist had 12 kills, Huntey had 11 and Goodson added 10. Fordyce finished with 30 assists while Paige Wyers added 12.

Defensively, Tobiczyk had 16 digs while Huntey added eight.
