FOOTBALL: Michigan Tech 38, Ferris 6

COMSTOCK PARK - The Battle at the Ballpark turned out to be not much of a battle as Michigan Tech University capitalized on an early Ferris State University turnover, grabbed the lead and never looked back en route to a 38-6 win at Fifth Third Park.

With the loss, Ferris falls to 1-5 overall and 0-5 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference following a loss to previously winless Michigan Tech. It was a disappointing outcome as the Bulldogs desperately wanted a win in front of a crowd of 2,964 in the baseball stadium for the West Michigan Whitecaps that was converted into a football stadium for this special contest.

But, it was not in the cards for the Bulldogs who fell into an early hole and simply could not dig themselves out of the pit.

"We're disappointed with the outcome of the game and some injuries really affected us out there tonight," said Ferris head coach Jeff Pierce.

Tech grabbed a 7-0 lead by the end of the first quarter and led 14-0 in the first quarter and 21-6 at halftime. The second half, however, was completely dominated by the Huskies who outscored Ferris 17-0 in the third and fourth quarters.

The numbers were not good for Ferris:
  • Tech had a 270-132 edge in rushing yardage
  • Tech had a 157-32 edge in passing yardage
  • Tech had a 427-164 advantage in total yards.
  • Tech runner Marvin Atkins rushed for 196 yards and two touchdowns
  • Tech passer Brent Heim completed 15-of-20 passes for 157 yards and a TD
Michigan Tech was in control of this game almost from the start and then held control all the way until the end as it dominated time of possession and almost doubled up the Bulldogs (Tech had it 39:18 to 20:42).

The Bulldogs had two Shawn Snoor field goals as he nailed a 33-yard kick and a 34-yard boot (both in the second quarter).

Tech was elated to get the win.

"It was a good team win," said Huskies head coach Tom Kearly. "We've been through a lot of adversity with injuries and a tough schedule, but we never quit. Marvin ran hard, and we played very good assignment football on defense."

Playing at Fifth Third Park was a joy for Ferris in spite of the loss.

"We enjoyed having the game in this facility and it is a great venue to play in," Pierce said. "I thought it was a great idea, but unfortunately the weather may have kept some people away tonight. This is something that maybe we might look to do again in the future if the situation is right."

That was all the offense Ferris could muster. The Bulldogs are back in action Oct. 10 (this coming Saturday) for homecoming as they host Indianapolis beginning at 2 p.m. from Top Taggart Field.
