FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. – The Central Collegiate Hockey Association, entering its 39th season of college hockey, has announced the release of its FOX Sports Detroit, Comcast Television (CTV), CBS College Sports (CBSC) and Big Ten Network (BTN) schedules for the 2009-10 season that will feature all 12 conference teams in at least two broadcasts. Altogether, 50 games involving CCHA teams will be televised, including 46 conference regular-season and playoff contests.
FOX Sports Detroit celebrates its 13th season of televising CCHA hockey during the 2009-10 campaign with a slate of 10 regular-season games, a campus-site playoff contest and all the drama from the CCHA Championship at Joe Louis Arena on March 19-20. The first game on Nov. 13 will feature arch rivals Michigan and Michigan State facing off in Ann Arbor.
The fourth FOX Sports Detroit telecast featuring Alaska visiting Michigan on Jan. 15 will be one of four games shown on FOX Sports Detroit PLUS. The station is an auxiliary channel made available when CCHA games coincide with Red Wings or Pistons games already slated for FOX Sports Detroit.
Eleven of the CCHA’s 12 teams will appear in regular-season action on FOX Sports Detroit, including four during the fourth annual ‘Hockey Day in Michigan’ on Saturday, Jan. 30. Western Michigan will visit Miami in the first game at 5:05 p.m., followed by Michigan and Michigan State playing at Joe Louis Arena at 7:35 p.m. Ken Daniels, Matt Shepard and Fred Pletsch are set to share announcing duties in the FOX Sports Detroit broadcast booth this coming season.
Telecasts of CCHA games are part of the more than 350 live local events presented each year by FOX Sports Detroit that reach more than 3.2 million cable and satellite households in Michigan and portions of Northwest Ohio and Northern Indiana.
Twenty conference games, including three playoff contests, will be featured as part of Comcast Television’s weekly CCHA package. CTV gets a jump on the season on by televising Michigan State’s first regular-season home game against Clarkson University on Oct. 9. Eight CCHA members will appear on CTV at least once and telecasts will originate from the home venues of four of the conference’s members; Miami, Michigan, Michigan State and Notre Dame. Fred Pletsch will provide play-by-play for Comcast’s presentations while former CCHA players Lyle Phair and Sean Ritchlin are set to share analyst duties.
CTV is offered on Comcast’s digital tier, Channel 900, to about 800,000 customers in the state of Michigan.
CBS College Sports has committed to an eight-game package, including three Notre Dame home contests. The defending CCHA champions will kick off CBSC’s CCHA coverage on Jan. 15 when they host Michigan State. They will return to the Joyce Center two weeks later for a two-game series between the Fighting Irish and Nebraska-Omaha. Coverage will also include a home-and-home series between Michigan and Ferris State on Jan. 22 and 23, and the Wolverines’ two-game visit to Nebraska-Omaha on Feb. 12 and 13. The final game on Feb. 26 will feature Ohio State visiting Miami.
Matt Shepard and Dave Ryan will handle play-by-play assignments for the CBSC package; Dave Starman and Jim Paradise will share the booth as color analysts.
The Big Ten Network is set to televise the second CCHA Championship semifinal, live, on March 19 from Joe Louis Arena. Additionally, BTN will air four all-CCHA matchups and Michigan’s trip to Wisconsin to take on the Badgers in the Camp Randall Hockey Classic on Feb. 6. Three other Wolverine games will be shown including a Jan. 23 contest against Ohio State and road trips to Michigan State and Notre Dame on Jan. 29 and Feb. 27, respectively. The other game will feature Alaska visiting Columbus to take on the Buckeyes on Feb. 12.
MY THOUGHTS: I think it's great to see the work that the CCHA has done to get these games televised for the hockey fans in the state of Michigan, Ohio and Indiana to be able to check out their teams, regionally. It's also nice to see that Ferris is going to be in the mix for some of these precious television games and that the spotlight will not be restricted to just the big boys (Michigan, Notre Dame, Michigan State, Ohio State, etc.). I am happy to see that not only are the Bulldogs going to be getting some love on television, but also will be getting some love right here in Big Rapids with some dates in Ewigleben Ice Arena.
