HOCKEY: Ferris Hopes To Convert Higher Percentage Of Shots On Goal This Season

BIG RAPIDS - Coming out of this weekend's exhibition contest at home against Wilfrid Laurier (a 3-1 loss), Ferris State University head coach Bob Daniels had a lot to feel excited about.

Still, there were concerns the veteran head coach discussed relative to his team's first taste of college hockey action Sunday afternoon in Ewigleben Ice Arena.

Ferris had a 56-26 edge, in terms of shots, but was outscored 3-1 on the scoreboard. Daniels did express his desire to see a higher conversion rate on shot attempts. Shots were fairly evenly distributed as Blair Riley had nine, Cody Chupp had seven and with six apiece were Todd Pococke (pictured) and Zach Redmond.

Last year, Ferris outshot opponents by a slim margin of 31.4 to 30.2.

"This is picking up off of last year with a high shot total and a minimum goal total," Daniels said as he met with members of the media following the exhibition. "We had 50-plus shots and only one goal. And yeah their goalie was good, but we've got to find ways. I don't want another year where we're talking about how we just couldn't finish."

Ferris' lone goal was scored by Chad Billins at 11:38 of the second period.

Unfortunately, the Bulldogs were victimized by a familiar enemy on the ice: a red-shot goaltender who played a whale of a game. This time, it was Wilfred Laurier's Ryan Daniels, who was superb in goal.

Daniels also expressed some concern about penalties and having his team be a little more sound in that area considering the strong competition ahead of the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs took five penalties (some ill timed) while Wilfred Laurier took seven in the contest.

All in all, Daniels was happy with what he saw from his Bulldogs in their first action on the ice with limited practice opportunities.
