FOOTBALL: Saginaw Valley 41, Ferris 7

UNIVERSITY CENTER – Ferris State University ran into a desperate Saginaw Valley State University football team hungry to strengthen its case for the NCAA Division II playoffs.

The Cardinals, ranked No. 22 in the nation, looked every bit the part as they rolled to a dominating 41-7 win over the Bulldogs at Wickes Stadium in University Center. With the loss, Ferris ends its season with a 1-10 overall record that includes a 0-10 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Saginaw Valley proved to be a legitimate football team that is worthy of the playoffs as a result of its strong play throughout this campaign. The Cardinals totaled 523 yards of total offense while they held the Bulldogs to just 130 yards of total offense including negative 42 yards on the ground (mostly due to a number of sacks). John Jacobs had 11 tackles and 2.5 sacks while Mike LeVand also had a sack as well to lead a dominating defensive effort for SVSU.

Quarterback Kyle Parrish, playing in his final collegiate game as a senior, completed 14-of-24 passes for 172 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. Chris Wilson had three receptions for 25 yards while Mike Ryan had two catches for 66 yards and a big-time touchdown catch. Also with two receptions apiece were running back Dwayne Williams and receiver Damien Miller.

Defensively, Matt Ryan ended his stellar season with 18 tackles, senior Nick Butler ended the last game of his career with 12 tackles, senior Santino Favot totaled eight tackles and lineman Jacob Moreno ended up with six tackles in the loss.

Ferris competed hard during stretches of the game, but in the end Saginaw Valley really seemed to turn momentum in the second quarter thanks to the athletic and talented Charles Dowdell. The SVSU quarterback, with his team already leading 14-0, busted a 59-yard touchdown run to make it 21-0 with 4:14 to go in the first half. With 46 seconds to go in the half, Saginaw Valley blew it open with a 4-yard touchdown run from Brandon Hayes to make it 28-0 at the half.

That turned a competitive game into a runaway victory for the Cardinals.
