The Bulldog cheerleaders are already active as they started their 2010-11 season in style this past week with a trip to Louisville, Ky. to participate in the 2010 National Cheerleaders Association Collegiate Summer Camp at the University of Louisville.
This was not just a trip for fun, however. The Bulldogs returned to Big Rapids with a second-place trophy in their division and earned a bronze bid to compete at the 2011 NCA College Nationals in April in Daytona Beach, Fla. That should be a pretty nice time to head down to Florida for some competition.
"It was a wonderful experience for our team and everyone learned so much," Ferris head coach Stacy Smith said. "The experience was priceless for our team and a great way to start off another season."
Much like the traditional kinds of sports camps people are accustomed to, Ferris cheer team members received instruction, safety training and more during the camp. In addition to being fun, the camp was productive in that it was educational and creative. The team learned about techniques to rev up the crowd on game day.
"I'm so proud of our team for their efforts and accomplishments," Bulldog team captain Liz Billiel said.
In addition to its bronze bid for nationals, the Bulldogs also placed second in the rally routine as part of the camp.
"We are still pumped about our bronze bid for nationals and the rally routine," team member Natasha Lemmen said. "It wasn't too shabby for our first year at the event."
The 2011 NCA College Nationals goes down April 6-10 at The Band Shell, Ocean Center and Peabody Auditorium in Daytona Beach.
