MEN'S BASKETBALL: Bulldogs Looking Tough This Season

I had a chance to watch the Ferris State University men's basketball team as it went to battle in Grand Rapids against Aquinas College.

I am increasingly confident about the possibilities of this team on the eve of the start of the 2010-11 campaign.

Already this season, senior big man Justin Keenan is, well, Justin Keenan. The big man is the "franchise" player for this squad and one would fully expect him to continue to deliver the goods in the paint.

Two wild cards for the Bulldogs are6-foot-4 Daniel Sutherlin, a sophomore who looks really good right now in the preseason, and 6-foot-6 Jerrell Sanders, a newcomer who is looking pretty tough for this team. Sanders and Sutherlin give the Bulldogs great athleticism and strength on the boards that will be a much-needed bonus this season. Keenan, Sanders and Sutherlin have the ability to give Ferris a strong edge on the glass and on defense.

Guard play is looking deeper and stronger this season thanks to the additions of guys like Kenny Brown and Brandyn Mungo. Guys like Dontae Molden and Darien Gay are known commodities who should continue to perform as expected. Look out also for DeMarco Sanders, who stepped in against Aquinas and looked like a guy who can contribute if he can get into and stay in the rotation.

Veterans Matt DeHart and Lou Williams (who also can help on the boards and on defense with his length and athleticism) continue to look solid as well.

This team has the look of a strong league championship contender, but there is a lot of tough competition out there.
