INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Fumbles, fumbles and more fumbles doomed Ferris State University as it suffered a heartbreaking 37-33 road loss to the University of Indianapolis on Saturday evening at Key Stadium.

The host Greyhounds scored 17 straight points to steal a come-from-behind Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win over the now struggling Bulldogs. The game's final score, to seal the deal for Indianapolis, was a 2-yard run by Paul Corsaro with just 48 seconds to play. Corsaro's go-ahead touchdown was made partially possible by one of the Bulldogs five turnovers (all on lost fumbles).

With the defeat, Ferris' third in a row, the Bulldogs fall to 5-4 overall and 5-3 in the GLIAC.

"Obviously it's very disappointing. I thought we were the dominant football team, but we turned the ball over too many times," Ferris head coach Jeff Pierce said as his team has now stumbled the last three weeks. "You can't survive a football game when those kinds of things happen."

In the first half, Tyler Thomas had a 4-yard touchdown run in the first half, Skyler Stoker had a 13-yard touchdown run in the second and Will Miles (who had three interceptions in the game) had a huge 70-yard pick he returned for a touchdown as Ferris trailed 20-19 at the end of the first half.

Running back Dwayne Williams opened the third quarter with a 3-yard touchdown run at 10:43 to put Ferris up 26-20. Tom Schneider scored on a 1-yard touchdown run with 9:21 to go as Ferris built its lead up to 33-20.

Ferris appeared in control of the game, but it was only temporary. Aaron Puntarelli converted a 38-yard field goal to make it 33-23 with 12:29 to go in the fourth quarter. Ryan Forney received a 6-yard touchdown pass from Chris Mills to make it 33-30 with 5:28 to go.

That all set the stage for UI to take the lead for good, with 48 seconds to go, as Corsaro scored from two yards out for the 37-33 lead.

"We really had them on the ropes for a while but they bounced back," Pierce said. "I give them credit for continuing to fight back, but this is a game that we should have won."

Indianapolis totaled 487 yards of total offense to an even 400 for the Bulldogs. Stoker led Ferris with 88 yards rushing on eight attempts with a TD. Schneider competed 24-of-31 passes for 207 yards. Mike Ryan was the top receiver with 11 catches for 93 yards.

Defensively, Matt Ryan had 16 total tackles to lead Ferris.
Ferris returns to Big Rapids for its home finale against Michigan Tech at Top Taggart Field with kickoff scheduled for 2 p.m.

HOCKEY: Ferris Gets The Tie (Shootout Win) Against No. 4 Michigan In Series Opener

In all honesty, no opponent gets Ferris State University's Ewigleben Ice Arena rocking like the University of Michigan when it pays a visit to Big Rapids.

Friday was no exception as the Bulldogs welcomed the Wolverines of head coach Red Berenson to Mecosta County. An energetic crowd of 2,021 watched the Bulldogs claim a 2-0 lead before Michigan, the fourth-ranked team in the nation, stormed back to tie the score at 2-2, on a goal by David Wohlberg (with an extra attacker) as just 12.7 seconds were left in the third period.

After a scoreless overtime, a shootout was next. Scores by Zach Redmond and Chad Billins ultimately lifted the Bulldogs a tie with a shootout win.

"I thought the team played really well," Ferris head coach Bob Daniels said in a game that saw his team outshot 30-28. "I was proud of how hard our guys played. Michigan had some good chances throughout the game. The (chances) they scored on were not necessarily their better chances. I don't know that we had a lot of good chances, but I think we capitalized on some of the ones we did get.

"All in all, a draw for tonight was probably a just result," Daniels added.

Eric Alexander scored the game's first goal at 8:39 of the second period off an assist from Mike Embach. At 11:52 of the third period, Redmond put the Bulldogs up 2-0 as he scored off an assist from Billins.

Michigan, however, bounced back off goals from Jacob Fallon (13:13 of the third) and Wohlberg (19:47 of the third) to tie the score.

"Absolutely there was disappointment (in not being able to hold the 2-0 lead) and we have to take care of that as this season progresses or it's going to burn us," Redmond said.
Pat Nagle, who was superb in net, made 28 saves against the two goals he allowed. Daniels also credited his defensemen and the defensive work of his forwards.

Shawn Hunwick had 26 saves for Michigan with two goals allowed.

The final score goes down as 2-2 with Ferris winning the shootout.

The Bulldogs (4-2-1, 1-1-1-1 in the CCHA) and Wolverines travel to Yost Ice Arena in Ann Arbor on Saturday for the second half of the series beginning at 7:35 p.m.

HOCKEY: Ferris Getting Ready To Take On No. 4 Michigan

It's always a fun time when the University of Michigan comes to Big Rapids to play Ferris State University in Ewigleben Ice Arena.

Tonight's (Oct. 29) game should be no different as the Wolverines, ranked fourth in the nation in the major polls.

The Bulldogs, coached by Bob Daniels, and Wolverines face-off tonight at 7:05 p.m. in this Central Collegiate Hockey Association home-and-home series.

Ferris is 4-2-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the CCHA while the Wolverines are 3-1-2 overall and 2-0-0 in conference action.

Michigan split a non-conference series last weekend against nationally-ranked Nebraska-Omaha while Ferris split last weekend at home against Ohio State.

The Wolverines, coached by Red Berenson, are led by senior forward Louie Caporusso, who has two goals and six assists for eight points while Carl Hagelin, also a senior, has six points on two goals with four assists.

For the Bulldogs, ace defenseman Zach Redmond (pictured) has three goals and three assists for six points while forward Nate Hennig (four goals and one assist) and blueliner Chad Billins (two goals and three assists) have five points apiece.

Ferris and Michigan wrap up their two-game series on Saturday night in Ann Arbor beginning at 7:38 p.m. in Yost Ice Arena.

HOCKEY: Ferris Still On The Outside Looking In Of USCHO Poll

Here is how the latest U.S. College Hockey Online (USCHO) national rankings looked (Oct. 25). Ferris State University is right on the edge of the national rankings. For now, however, the Bulldogs remain on the outside looking in.

Ferris received 19 points after it split a Central Collegiate Hockey Association series last weekend in Big Rapids against Ohio StateUniversity. The Bulldogs, led by goaltender Pat Nagle (pictured), were 2-1 winners on Friday before the Buckeyes bounced back to claim a 5-3 win on Saturday.

This weekend, Ferris hosts the University of Michigan on Friday in Big Rapids beginning at 7:05 in Ewigleben Ice Arena and then travels to Ann Arbor to face the Wolverines on Saturday at 7:35 p.m. in Yost Ice Arena.

VOLLEYBALL: Brandel-Wilhelm Earns Her 300th Victory At Ferris

Here is a note about a milestone achieved by Ferris State University volleyball coach Tia Brandel-Wilhelm, who earned a historic victory in the Bulldog program:

A milestone was reached following the Ferris State University women's volleyball team's 3-1 victory at Michigan Tech Sunday (Oct. 24) as FSU head coach Tia Brandel-Wilhelm recorded her 300th victory directing the Bulldog program.

Brandel-Wilhelm, who's currently in her 15th season at Ferris State, has compiled a 300-159 (.654) coaching record during that time and is 31 more victories away from becoming the school's all-time winningest coach. Jill Hirschinger, a 2008 FSU Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, went 330-151 (.686) from 1984-95 directing the Bulldogs' program.

In her tenure at Ferris State, Brandel-Wilhelm has led the Bulldogs to 13 winning seasons and six appearances (1999, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2009) in the NCAA Division II Tournament. In 2004, Brandel-Wilhelm directed Ferris State to the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championship title as the Bulldogs won the conference tournament. For her efforts, she has twice (1998 and 2002) been selected by her conference coaching peers as the GLIAC Coach of the Year.

FOOTBALL: Buday Does Nice Job Stepping In For Bulldogs

Tom Schneider, as a quarterback, has been nothing short of a warrior for Ferris State University's football team.

Saturday, in a 41-0 loss to top-ranked Grand Valley State University, Schneider was knocked out of the game after a legal hit from Laker defensive end Nick Lawrence. At the time, Schneider had completed 5-of-8 passes for 35 yards with an interception and he had rushed seven times for 17 yards prior to being knocked out of the game due to injury late in the first half.

Enter Michael Buday, a redshirt freshman and Ferris' backup quarterback following the injury to Robert Banaszak who had season-ending surgery.

Buday entered the game and performed solidly, under pressure, as he completed 8-of-13 passes for 54 yards.

In the game, Schneider was sacked three times before Buday also was sacked three times. Even though he was under great pressure, from start to finish, he looked pretty comfortable and did nice things with the football when he had the time and receivers worked themselves free of defenders.

Chris Wilson and Leon Curry each had three receptions, Mike Ryan and Matt Schuelke each had two catches and with one apiece were Keenan Bowman, Elijah Johnson and Dwayne Williams.

FOOTBALL: Ferris-Grand Valley Video Highlights

Here are a few highlights from the Ferris State University-Grand Valley State University football game on Oct. 23 in Big Rapids.

It was a tough game and I found as many Bulldog highlights as I could.

FOOTBALL: Lakers Live Up To Their Billing

Ferris State cornerback Will Miles, who had an interception on Saturday, makes a tackle during the Bulldogs' home game against No. 1 Grand Valley State at Top Taggart Field in Big Rapids. (Ed Hyde, FSU Photographic Services)

Coming into this weekend's contest, Grand Valley State University was ranked No. 1 in one top Division II poll and No. 2 in another.

Whether they are No. 1 or No. 2, one thing is no longer in doubt: They proved to Ferris State University and to the nation one thing that they're very good.

Grand Valley rolled to a 41-0 win over Ferris at Top Taggart Field in Big Rapids.

The Bulldogs struggled to match up with the speed of the Lakers from start to finish. GVSU's defensive speed was pretty evident as its linemen and linebackers created all kinds of havoc in the Ferris offensive backfield. Quarterbacks Tom Schneider and Michael Buday both were flushed out of the pocket if not outright sacked numerous times throughout the contest. Schneider was sacked three times and knocked out of the game after a hit delivered by the Lakers' Nick Lawrence, a talented defensive end. Buday came on in relief, but he too was sacked three times and forced out of the pocket or hurried numerous other times.

The Bulldogs had trouble handling the pass rushers of the Lakers. GVSU blitzed to stop the run as well using linebackers and safeties.

Taking an opportunity to look at some of the film from today's game it was even more apparent the strength the Lakers have on both the offensive and defensive lines. So far this season, Ferris' defensive line of Jacob Moreno, Muneer Bawayeh, Jordan Morgan and Brad Iskow have given opponents fits. Saturday, however, Ferris struggled to get pressure on GVSU starting quarterback Kyle McMahon. On the other side, Ferris' offensive line of Trevor Smolinski, Scott Shattuck, Joe Voiles and Taylor Sprague were under tremendous pressure from the GVSU front seven.

It's doubtful Ferris will face a defense with that kind of speed again and I expect the Bulldog defensive front to get back to work beginning this weekend at Indianapolis.

FOOTBALL: The Keys To Grand Valley's Win Over Ferris

So, how did the No. 1 ranked college football team in Division II, Grand Valley State University, earn its 41-0 win over archrival Ferris State University?
  • First, when you win by that kind of margin it's safe to say you've dominated in all phases;

  • The Lakers were dominant on both lines of scrimmage from start to finish in the game. The Grand Valley defense registered six sacks (three each of starting quarterback Tom Schneider, who was later knocked out of the game due to injury, and Michael Buday, who came on in relief);

  • GVSU's speed was tremendous and was evident from start to finish as it used speed to get to the quarterback and to blow up the Bulldogs' rushing attack throughout the game;

  • The Lakers' were sound in special teams as Ferris struggled to get good field position in that phase and then could not beat the GVSU defense;

  • Kyle McMahon, the Grand Valley quarterback, was the catalyst as he rushed and passed the football with efficiency (he only had one bad decision);

  • Grand Valley's balanced running game was dominant against the Bulldogs as the Lakers rushed for 242 yards; and

  • The total yardage says it all: GVSU totaled 503 yards of total offense to 118 for Ferris.

In all honesty, it's tough to sugarcoat Saturday afternoon's results from a game that was supposed to be for first place in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Ferris State University fell in a hole early and never recovered as top-ranked Grand Valley State University rolled to a decisive 41-0 win over the host Bulldogs at Top Taggart Field in Big Rapids during the annual Anchor-Bone Classic.

Playing for a share of first place in the GLIAC, the visiting Lakers scored 10 in the first quarter, 14 in the second, 10 in the third and seven in the fourth to earn a dominating win.

"Obviously it was very disappointing but you have to give Grand Valley the credit," a disappointed Ferris head coach Jeff Pierce said during the post-game press conference after his team was outgained in total offense by a stunning margin, 503-118. "They came in and played very well and we didn't we didn't execute the way we needed and we fell short."

The Bulldogs rushed for 29 yards on 29 attempts and passed for just 89 yards and lost starting quarterback Tom Schneider to injury late in the first half. Conversely, GVSU rushed for a strong 242 yards and passed for 261.

"It was our most dominating performance of the year and we had it in all three phases. Defensively, I don't know what the sack total was, but we got a lot of pressure on their quarterback," Grand Valley head coach Matt Mitchell said. "Nick (Lawrence) had a big hit just before the half and knocked Schneider out and Tom Schneider is their best player.

"We never gave them a chance to get it going running or passing the ball."

Quarterback Kyle McMahon led a balanced Laker rushing attack with 64 yards. Five other GVSU players had 24 yards or more rushing. McMahon also passed for 182 yards and a touchdown with one interception.

Schneider was rushed for 17 yards on seven carries and passed for just 35 yards before he left the game due to injury. Michael Buday, who came on in relief at quarterback, passed for 54 yards on 8-of-13 passes. Schneider was sacked three times and Buday was sacked three times. The pressure was relentless.

Tayo Moss led the Bulldog defense with 13 tackles, Matt Ryan had 11 and with seven apiece were Chad Wilson and Alex Brajak. Will Miles had four tackles total and one interception.

The Bulldogs return to the road next Saturday as they take on the University of Indianapolis in a 6 p.m. league showdown in Indianapolis, Ind.

HOCKEY: Ferris State 2, Ohio State 1

Ferris State's Kyle Bonis (28) takes a shot at the goal of Ohio State netminder Cal Heeter during Friday night's game in Ewigleben Ice Arena. (Ed Hyde/FSU Photographic Services)

For Ferris State University, Friday night figured to be be the stage for one of those games that would stand as an early test of where the Bulldogs are as a hockey team.

Following a scoreless first period, Ferris outscored Ohio State 2-1 in the second and held on for a 2-1 Central Collegiate Hockey Association win before a crowd of 1,678 in Ewigleben Ice Arena to open the two-game series. In a game that was relatively close, Ferris' two-goal second period was just enough to propel the Bulldogs to a victory to start league play.

"I thought the first period was a tremendous period of hockey for both teams. The pace was unbelievable without a single penalty," Ferris head coach Bob Daniels said. "At times, we were a little sloppy, but you have to give credit to Ohio State for playing well, too."

After starting the season 3-1-0 (splitting at Alabama-Huntsville before sweeping St. Lawrence at home), Ferris came was ready.

Senior forward Nate Hennig, who is enjoying a great start to the season, got the scoring started as he beat OSU goaltender Cal Heeter (assisted by Kyle Bonis and Zach Redmond) at 12:20 of the second period.

"Things are going my way and that is the way it goes for guys some times," Hennig said. "I can't look past my linemates who are getting me the puck and putting me in positions to make the plays."

The Bulldogs then built the lead to two as Hennig and Bonis traded roles. Bonis scored off an assists from Hennig and Chad Billins at 14:51.

"It was nice to get out there to play with Aaron Schmitt and Nate Hennig," Bonis said. "I was fortunate that Nate got me the puck and I was able to put it in."

Ohio State finally got on the scoreboard, at 18:20, as C.J. Severyn scored off assists from Curtis Gedig and Devon Krogh to make it 2-1 on the scoreboard.

Between the pipes, Pat Nagle was superb for the Bulldogs with help in front from Redmond, Billins and others.

"He looks very calm, everything looks simple and moving at a slow pace," Daniels said. "A sign of a good goalie is when you don't notice him too much."

The Bulldogs and Buckeyes wrap up their two-game series on Saturday night with the puck set to drop at 7:05 p.m. in Big Rapids.

Ferris State University is set to host Ohio State this evening in the first half of a two-game Central Collegiate Hockey Association series in Big Rapids at Ewigleben Ice Arena with starting times of 7:05 p.m. on both nights.

Here are some pregame notes to consider prior to tonight's game:

  • Ferris is 3-1-0 overall on the season as it opens CCHA play tonight.

  • Head coach Bob Daniels is in his 19th season on the bench for the Bulldogs and has a career record of 293-335-69.

FOOTBALL: Ferris And No. 1 Grand Valley Should Be A Good One

This is one of those games where coaches do not need to invest a whole lot of time in motivational speeches or tactics.

This is one of those games, the Anchor-Bone Classic, where the alumni, administrators, fans, coaches, players and others are fired up.

Ferris State University will host No. 1 Grand Valley State University at 2 p.m. in Big Rapids at Top Taggart Field in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference showdown.

A large crowd is expected to be on hand as the Bulldogs (5-2 overall and 5-1 in the GLIAC) host the visiting Lakers (7-0 overall and 6-0 in the GLIAC).

"This is one of those games where you don't have to worry about motivating your guys because they know what it's all about to play in this game," said Ferris head coach Jeff Pierce (pictured), who is in his 16th season as head coach of the Bulldogs. "With the rivalry, their position in the conference and what is on the line, we know that everyone is going to come out ready to play."

On the opposite side, Grand Valley is coached by Matt Mitchell, who is in his first season as head coach of the Lakers and is off to a 7-0 start. He is no newbie to the Laker tradition, however, as he served for six years as a GVSU football assistant coach.

NOTES: The Anchor-Bone Classic Trophy, sponsored by Huntington Bank, is awarded annually to the winner of the Ferris-Grand Valley football game ... The Bulldogs had their five-game winning streak snapped last week with their 22-20 road loss to Northern Michigan ... Grand Valley leads the all-time rivalry series with Ferris 25-12-1 ... The Bulldogs have not defeated GVSU since a 48-23 win in 1999

HOCKEY: Ferris And Ohio State Looking For Big Starts In The CCHA

This is the opening weekend of Central Collegiate Hockey Association play for Ferris State University's ice hockey team as it hosts The Ohio State Buckeyes on Friday and Saturday nights in Ewigleben Ice Arena.

The Bulldogs enter this contest at 3-1-0 overall while the Buckeyes come in at 1-2-0 overall at the start of CCHA action for both squads.

Ferris is coming off a series sweep of St. Lawrence in Big Rapids as Ferris opened the weekend with a 4-2 win and closed successful set with a 3-0 victory over the Saints. The Bulldogs are listed among others receiving votes in both of this week's (Oct. 18)

The Bulldogs, led by the likes of Jordie Johnston (pictured) are listed among other teams receiving votes in both the U.S. College Hockey Online (USCHO) and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls.

Meanwhile, the Buckeyes are coming off a 4-3 non-league home loss to Robert Morris last Friday (Oct. 15) at Value City Arena in Columbus, Ohio. Prior to that, however, Ohio State started the season with a split of a non-conference road series against Quinnipiac (Oct. 8-9) in Hamden, Conn. OSU lost 2-1 before it bounced back to win 4-0.

Here is scouting information compiled by Ferris Athletics Communications:

BASKETBALL: Gear Up For The Big 131 Showdown

Brutus the Bulldog (right) and Louie the Laker (left) were on hand for the big announcement.

Let the hype begin as Ferris State University and Grand Valley State University look ahead to their men's and women's basketball doubleheader on Jan. 29, 2011 at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids.

The games are being dubbed the 131 Showdown and are presented by Amway and should be a great West Michigan showcase that puts the rivalry on a grander scale.

Some of the details were revealed during a Wednesday press conference at Van Andel Arena that involved representatives from both schools.

FOOTBALL: Ferris To Face Grand Valley Team Ranked No. 2 By D2football.com

This week's D2football.com Top 25 Poll illustrates the challenge ahead for Ferris State University as it hosts archrival and second-ranked Grand Valley State University in the Anchor-Bone Classic this weekend at 2 p.m. at Top Taggart Field in Big Rapids.

It's no big surprise that the Lakers are ranked second in the nation (although I imagine some would assume they would be the top-ranked team in pretty much any poll).

The Lakers have made some changes this year with a new head coach (Matt Mitchell), a new starting quarterback (Kyle McMahon) and other significant changes.

Coming into this season, few probably new fully what to expect from the Bulldogs of head coach Jeff Pierce and the Lakers. Ferris was coming off of one of its worst seasons in recent memory, its quarterback (Tom Schneider) played most of 2009 with an injury that prevented him from passing, while Grand Valley was coming in off of a challenging off-season stretch during which it lost some key players from the 2009 squad and had a devastating preseason, season-ending injury to its top defensive player (Danny Richard).

In some ways, both Ferris and Grand Valley have responded this season. Prior to last weekend's 22-20 loss at Northern Michigan, the Bulldogs were inching toward a national ranking.

One good way for the Bulldogs to get a national ranking (or get a heck of a lot closer), however, is to upset the second-ranked Lakers this weekend at Top Taggart Field.

FOOTBALL: Here Is A Look At GLIAC Standings

Here is a look at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football standings after this weekend's game.

Ferris State University's 22-20 road loss in the Superior Dome to Northern Michigan has dropped it out of a first-place North Division tie with Grand Valley State University for first place. GVSU now is in sole possession of first at 6-0 with Ferris one game back at 5-1 as the rivals will face off in the Anchor-Bone Classic in Big Rapids this coming Saturday.

That will be a huge game due to, if for no other reason, the current look of the North Division standings of the GLIAC.

North Division Standings

GLIAC All
Grand Valley St. 6-0 7-0
Ferris St. 5-1 5-2
Michigan Tech 4-2 4-2
Northern Mich. 4-2 4-3
Northwood (Mich.) 4-2 4-3
Saginaw Valley 3-3 3-4
Indianapolis 2-4 3-4

South Division Standings

GLIAC All
Hillsdale 5-1 6-1
Wayne St. (Mich.) 4-2 5-2
Ashland 3-3 4-3
Ohio Dominican 1-5 1-5
Findlay 1-5 1-6
Tiffin 0-6 1-6
Lake Erie 0-6 0-7

As a side note, congratulations to Ohio Dominican University picking up its first GLIAC win courtesy of a 20-10 win over the University of Findlay.

FOOTBALL: Northern Michigan 22, Ferris State 20

MARQUETTE - It was a tough pill to swallow for the Ferris State University football team as it dropped a 22-20 decision to Northern Michigan in the Superior Dome on Saturday in the Upper Peninsula.

The Bulldogs, who saw their five-game win streak snapped, lost in spite of the fact they outgained the Wildcats 306 to 229. Ferris had some turnovers, including a lost fumble and an interception, that hurt the cause. Moreover, the Bulldogs were hampered by good field position Northern took advantage of through special teams (on returns).

"We're very disappointed. We've been kind of rolling the dice and winning in these tight games," Ferris head coach Jeff Pierce said as his team falls out of a first-place tie in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. "(Saturday) was a day we were not able to pull that off. We didn't execute the things we needed to execute to beat a good football team."

Northern was a good football team with a strong running game. John Privitelli, who rushed for 135 yards and one touchdown, got the scoring started as he rushed into the end zone from two yards out at 11:02 of the first quarter.

Ferris answered as speedy running back Tyler Thomas scored at 8:10 of the first quarter from 23 yards out to make it a 7-6 game in favor of the Bulldogs.

Later in the first half, at 3:06 of the first quarter, Dustin Brancheau scored on a 13-yard pass from Privitelli on the halfback pass for a 13-7 NMU.

In the second quarter, at 14:19, fullback Aaron Olman scored on a 6-yard pass from quarterback Tom Schneider to put Ferris up 14-13.

Rockne Belmonte, the NMU placekicker, booted a 51-yard field goal to put the Wildcats back up at 16-14. at 10:58. To open scoring in the third quarter, Belmonte connected on a 27-yard field goal to put the Wildcats up 19-14.

Ferris countered as receiver Mike Ryan hauled in a 33-yard touchdown reception from Schneider at 8:35 of the third quarter to put Ferris back in the lead 20-19.

Northern, however, won the game off the foot of Belmonte. The Wildcats capitalized on good field position and used a 31-yard field goal from Belmonte to seal the deal at 4:16 of the fourth.

The Bulldogs were unable to counter as Northern held on for the win.

Schneider completed 21-of-28 passes for 190 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Thomas was the top rusher with 66 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries. Ryan was the top receiver with six receptions for 76 yards and a TD. Defensively, Tayo Moss led Ferris with 10 tackles and 1.5 sacks while Jacob Moreno had eight tackles. Brad Iskow and Matt Ryan each had seven tackles.

With the loss, Ferris falls to 5-2 overall and 5-1 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference while Northern improves to 4-3 overall and 4-2 in the league.

"We'll bounce back and if (the Bulldogs) can't get ready for next weekend then there's something wrong," Pierce said. "It's not going to be hard to get them back and get them focused."

Ferris has no time to dwell on this loss as it hosts archrival and national power Grand Valley State University at Top Taggart Field in the Anchor-Bone Classic at 2 p.m. Saturday.

FOOTBALL: Ferris To Face NMU Squad Minus Kopach

Here is a look at the Superior Dome in Marquette a little more than an hour before the start of this afternoon's game between Ferris State and Northern Michigan. (Photo/Sandy Gholston)

MARQUETTE - Ferris State University is warming up on the artificial surface inside the Superior Dome in preparation for its game this afternoon at 1 p.m. against Northern Michigan.

The Wildcats are expected to play this game without quarterback Carter Kopach, who appears to be lost for the season due to an injury suffered last weekend. Kopach was leading NMU with 1,353 yards of total offense as he had rushed for 274 and passed for 1,079.

Jacob Hicks, a freshman, is expected to continue at quarterback for the Wildcats. Hicks played in two games last season and came on in relief last weekend. Also on the depth chart at QB is Gerrit Mortensen, a junior.

With a younger quarterback, it will be especially important for Ferris to be able to contain the NMU running game. The defensive line, anchored by Jacob Moreno and Muneer Bawayeh in the middle, will be leading the effort to stop the running game. On the ends, Brad Iskow and Jordan Morgan will work to generate pass pressure.

NMU NOTES: Head coach Bernie Anderson is in his fifth season at Northern ... The Wildcats trail the all-time series with Ferris 14-16-6 ... The Bulldogs dropped last year's meeting in Marquette by a score of 34-0 ... Dustin Brancheau leads NMU with 24 receptions this season for 350 yards ... Northern is averaging 36 points per game in the Superior Dome ... The Wildcats are holding opponents to just 14.5 points per game.

HOCKEY: Video From Bob Daniels' Post-Game Press Conference (St. Lawrence)

Here are post-game comments from Ferris State University hockey head coach Bob Daniels following the Friday evening game against St. Lawrence at Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids.

HOCKEY: Ferris State-St. Lawrence Video Action Highlights

Here are highlights from Friday (Oct. 15) night's ice hockey game between Ferris State University and St. Lawrence.

BIG RAPIDS - It was a sweet homecoming for Ferris State University as its Bulldogs got off to a solid start and claimed a 4-2 non-conference victory over visiting St. Lawrence in of Ewigleben Ice Arena before a crowd of 1,539.

With Friday's win, Ferris improves to 2-1-0 overall as it gears up for Saturday's second game (of the series) in Big Rapids.

"I think we had two seniors who came out and played particularly well for us," said Ferris head coach Bob Daniels as he spoke of his senior leaders. "Pat Nagle had an outstanding night and the kids have a lot of confidence playing in front of him. And Zach Redmond had a whale of a night.

"On and off the ice you have to have that leadership because they have such a calming influence on the team," Daniels added.

Nagle got the start and delivered as he faced 23 shots and saved 21 to earn the win against the visiting Saints. The Ferris senior netminder had offensive help as Matthew Kirzinger got the scoring started with a score at 2:29 of the first period off an assist from Todd Pococke.

After St. Lawrence evened the score at 1-1 on a goal by Jacob Drewiske, the Bulldogs responded in the second period as Cory Kane scored an even-strength unassisted goal at 6:12 to put Ferris up 2-1.

Nate Hennig scored his second goal of the season assisted by Derek Graham at 2:01 of the third period.

Nick Pitsikoulis scored at 5:15 to pull St. Lawrence to within one goal again at 3-2 as he was assisted by Greg Carey.

Garrett Thompson, however, scored a huge goal to put the Bulldogs back up by two goals, at 4-2, at 14:34.

The Bulldogs were excited to come away with a win after splitting their season-opening series at the University of Alabama-Huntsville.

"After last weekend, with what happened at Alabama-Huntsville, I don't think any of us were really satisfied," Hennig said. "(In game one against St. Lawrence), we came into it and tried to bare down, keep it simple, do what we do best and keep it simple."

Keeping it simple paid off for Ferris, which outshot the Saints just 24-23, in the form of a big home-opening victory.

St. Lawrence drops to 0-1-2 on the season.

Game two of the series begins at 7:05 p.m. in Ewigleben Ice Arena on Saturday night as the Bulldogs go for a sweep.

FOOTBALL: Chasing the Dream Part 8: Chris Wilson Talks About The Team Exceeding Expectations

Ferris State University student-athletes arrive on campus with all kinds of hopes and dreams of how they can best utilize their dual status as students and as athletes.

In this eighth installment of the Chasing the Dream series, Ferris football student-athlete Chris Wilson reflects on the beginning of the season when the Bulldogs began with low expectations as far as preseason polls and how, to this point, they have beaten the odds.

"They had us marked real low (the preseason Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Coaches Poll), but I believe that honestly we didn't think about it," Wilson said. "What we thought about was how it felt every game coming home losing and how it felt every game with no fans were there.

"We would go and talk to people and be like 'Are you coming to the game?' And, they would ask, 'Are you going to win?"

Throughout this series, Chris will discuss his goals, the team's goals, the team's progress, his dreams, talents and challenges as he performs a juggling act as an adult.

In addition to being a football student-athlete for the Bulldogs, Chris is a soon-to-be graduate of Ferris' Television and Digital Media Production program.

Here is the eighth video of the continuing series.

Chris and his teammates are in Ohio this weekend to take on Northern Michigan University with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m. in the Superior Dome in Marquette.

VOLLEYBALL: Scouting This Week's Competition

Here is a scouting report put together previewing Ferris State University's non-conference regional competition.

The Bulldogs have had success against two of the three opponents it will face this weekend in Illinois. Head coach Tia Brandel-Wilhelm (pictured) has a 3-0 record against Missouri-St. Louis and a 2-0 record against Wisconsin-Parkside. She is going into her first action against Rockhurst, which has traditionally been a solid program.

This should be a good weekend of action for the Bulldogs on the volleyball court.

Here is the scouting report as compiled by Ferris Athletics Communications:

Missouri-St. Louis: Ferris State has a 5-0 lead against Missouri-St. Louis in an all-time series, which includes a 5-0 road/neutral site mark. The Bulldogs claimed a 3-2 triumph over UMSL last season (Oct. 16) in a 2009 Asics GLVC/GLIAC Crossover Tournament contest in Lansing, Mich. Missouri-St. Louis extended its current winning streak to four as the Tritons posted a 3-0 conference road decision over Drury last Saturday (Oct. 9) in Springfield, Mo., in improving its overall record to 14-3 overall and 7-1 in the GLVC. The Tritons, who are coached by third-year head coach Trent Jones have won 10 of their last 11 matches to date with the lone setback occurring in a 3-1 league match at Indianapolis (Sept.25). Tia Brandel-Wilhelm vs. UMSL - 3-0.

Rockhurst: This Friday's (Oct. 15) tilt will mark the first-ever meeting between the two schools. The Hawks currently sport a 16-5 record overall this campaign, which includes a 5-3 ledger in the GLVC, under the direction of 23rd-year head coach Tracy Rietzke. RU has won six of its last nine matches to date despite falling 3-0 on the road to nationally-ranked Central Missouri Tuesday (Oct. 12) in Warrensburg, Mo. Tia Brandel-Wilhelm vs. RU - 0-0.

Wisconsin-Parkside: The Bulldogs have a 13-0 lead over Wisconsin-Parkside in their all-time series but haven't faced the Rangers since 2002. In the most recent meeting, FSU registered a 3-0 victory at the 2002 GLIAC/GLVC Challenge (Sept. 13) in Allendale, Mich. UWP has produced a 13-6 overall mark and is 5-3 in GLVC matches to date this fall. The Rangers claimed a 3-0 non-league victory over Saint Xavier (Ill.) Tuesday (Oct. 12) and have come away victorious in 10 of their last 13 outings. Tia Brandel-Wilhelm vs. UWP - 2-0.

There should be some good action in Illinois.

FOOTBALL: Hard Not To Like The Competitors In Ferris' Secondary

Coming into this season, the secondary was supposed to be a weakness for Ferris State University's football team that was going to be too tough to overcome.

That has not been the case. Even with the loss in recent weeks of senior co-captain Chad Wilson, at safety, Ferris' secondary has still made life tough on opposing receivers.

Cornerbacks Antwian Windmon and Will Miles have been tough as nails going against some of the top receivers in Division II so far this season. What's great to see is those two play with a bit of a swagger and welcome the challenge of quarterbacks trying to slip one to a receiver past them. Windmon is just a sophomore, with a bit of experience, while Miles is a junior, but in only his first season with the Bulldogs.

Windmon has 17 unassisted tackles and a total of 23 with two interceptions and seven pass breakups. Miles has 13 unassisted and a total of 19 with seven pass breakups.

At safety, with Wilson out, Ferris has had strong production from a pair of redshirt freshmen in John Purdy (pictured) and Jonathan Flynn. Those two have played tough, hard-nosed football for the Bulldogs and have begun to get some attention (well deserved) from observers of Ferris football.

Flynn ranks among Ferris' top tacklers with 19 unassisted and a total of 27. He has two pass breakups and one fumble recovery. Purdy, meanwhile, 14 total tackles (eight unassisted) and two pass breakups.

Among guys filling back up roles are redshirt freshman Devon German, sophomore Arshaun Hall, sophomore Jamar Slade and sophomore Mike Davis.

It's nice to see that young secondary stepping up as the unit gains valuable experience.

VOLLEYBALL: Bulldogs Step Away From Conference Action, But Not Tough Competition

It's a big weekend coming up for the Ferris State University volleyball team as it takes on some important regional competition in Illinois.

The Bulldogs will be competing in the 2010 Mizuno Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC)/Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Crossover Tournament this weekend (Oct. 15-16) at the Great Lakes Center in Aurora, Ill.

Ferris State is 10-6 overall and 7-5 in the GLIAC as it takes a break from conference action, but not much of a break in terms of level of competition. Coming off a successful weekend of action in Big Rapids, Ferris is on a three-match winning streak led by talented competitors like libero Lisa Tobiczyk (pictured).
