MEN'S BASKETBALL: No Time To Panic For Bulldogs

Ferris State University's Darien Gay (11), shown here against Drury (Mo.) during the Owensboro Classic, will continue to be a key player for the Bulldogs this season. (Photo courtesy Scott Puryear - Drury)

Ferris State University
suffered a pair of losses last week in Owensboro, Ky.

I had a few conversations with head coach Bill Sall and he knew that his team would face some very tough competition down in the Bluegrass State as Ferris took part in the Owensboro Classic.

The Bulldogs knew full well that Drury (Mo.) would be good and that Kentucky Wesleyan would send its usual strong team to the hardwood.

Ferris suffered an 88-72 loss to Drury (Nov. 26) and followed that up with an 85-73 setback at the hands of nationally-ranked Kentucky Wesleyan (Nov. 27).

Back-to-back losses dropped the Bulldogs to 3-2.

Obviously, Ferris wants to win as many of these regional games as possible and a split would have been big (a sweep would have been huge).

But, the Kentucky journey is behind Ferris and the Bulldogs now must focus on what it will take to get off to a good start in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action.

The Bulldogs host Tiffin University on Dec. 2 (Thursday) and then welcomes Ohio Dominican on Dec. 4 (Saturday) in Jim Wink Arena.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Former Bulldog Player Returns To Harbor Springs To Coach Her Alma Mater

Jennifer Foley, better known as "Jennifer Brogger" from her women's basketball playing days at Ferris State University, now is a head coach in high school at her alma mater: Harbor Springs High School.

Here is an excerpt from a story published in the Petoskey News-Review as written by Andy Sneddon:
Foley, 29, graduated from Harbor Springs in 1999 and played during a golden era of girls' basketball at the school under coach Gary Morse.

A three-year letter winner, Foley - then known as Brogger - helped lead those Harbor teams to three straight Lake Michigan Conference championships, two regional titles, and a Class C state semifinal berth.

She went on to play at Ferris State University before transferring to Saginaw Valley for her senior year. She played basketball at both schools, and became an All-American in the javelin in track.

Foley, the wife of News-Review sports writer Steve Foley, cut her coaching teeth as an assistant for three years in the women's program at Northwood University. She led the Harbor freshman girls' team for the past three years.

Her father, Tom, is her JV coach.

"With him being the JV coach, I know exactly what he's working on at the JV level and I can count on (the players) being prepared to come the varsity level," said Foley, a personal trainer at Sports Specific Training in Petoskey. "All I'd like to see is 100 percent effort and team work, 100 percent of the time.

"These girls are amazing. The No. 1 strength of our team is our character. I haven't met a better group of girls. They already understand my expectations. Even more, I think I know what makes them tick too."
It's always great to see former student-athletes do big things after their playing days have concluded.

HOCKEY: Nationally-Ranked Ferris Shuts Out Michigan State For 3-0 Road Win

Chad Billins scored once and Eric Alexander (pictured) twice (including an empty-net goal) as nationally-ranked Ferris State University went on the road to East Lansing and defeated Michigan State University 3-0 in Munn Ice Arena.

It's a great way to go into the Thanksgiving break as the Bulldogs used a 27-save performance from senior goaltender Pat Nagle en route to earning the win over the host Spartans, who have had their struggles so far this year, before a crowd of 5,107.

This is a very positive win for the Bulldogs who needed to prove they could win on the road in a tough environment.

A couple of weeks back, Ferris was shut out in back-to-back road losses in Sault Ste. Marie against Lake Superior State University.

Tuesday, however, the Bulldogs bounced back in an impressive way with a great road performance (strong goaltending, good overall defense and an early lead, etc.).

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Ferris Gets Road Regional Win Over Lewis

Ferris State University's women's basketball team went on the road, for the first time in the regular season, and earned a 55-52 victory over Lewis University in Romeoville, Ill. on Tuesday (Nov. 23).

Tiara Adams led the Bulldogs with 14 points and 11 rebounds against the host Flyers. Kelsey DeNoyelles (pictured) totaled 12 points and seven rebounds while while Tricia Principe scored 11 points and added six rebounds.

Ferris now is 2-1 topping Lewis after knocking off 15th-ranked Gannon on Sunday (Nov. 21) prior to Tuesday's victory.

The Bulldogs will go for a three-game winning streak as they visit St. Joseph's (Ind.) on Wednesday (Nov. 24) with tipoff scheduled for 6:30 p.m. in another non-league, regional battle at the Richard Scharf Fieldhouse in Rensselaer, Ind.

HOCKEY: Jackie Green Gives You A Different Look At Bulldog Hockey

The multi-talented Jackie Green, a Ferris State University student and former Bulldog women's cross country/track and field athlete (and one of my all-time favorites), is showcasing other talents.

Jackie stopped by the Bulldog-Western Michigan University hockey game last Saturday, in Big Rapids, and put together this nice video package.

Enjoy.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Ferris' Keenan Earns GLIAC North Division Player Of The Week Honor

The honors just keep rolling in for Ferris State University senior center Justin Keenan, the 2010-11 Division II Bulletin Preseason National Player of the Year.

This week's honor, for the 6-foot-7 big man, is being named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference North Division Men's Basketball Player of the Week.

The Grand Rapids native, who prepped at Ottawa Hills High School, scored 25 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in a 66-55 win over St. Joseph's, a top-10 preseason national team, and totaled 25 points and 12 rebounds in a 64-61 win over Lewis University to improve to 3-0 on the young season under head coach Bill Sall.

Keenan is off to a strong start this season with two brilliant performances to lead the Bulldogs to two key regional wins. Ferris needed those wins and had to protect its home floor. In both cases it was mission accomplished for Ferris.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Principe Earns GLIAC North Division Player Of The Week Honor

Ferris State University women's basketball standout Tricia Principe picked up some recognition as she was named this week's Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Basketball North Division Player of the Week.

Ferris split two games at its own Bulldog Classic in Big Rapids. Principe scored 21 points in the season-opening 69-60 loss to Edinboro (Pa.) on Saturday, but bounced back to score 25 points to lead the Bulldogs to an 80-71 upset victory over 15th-ranked Gannon (Pa.) on Sunday afternoon.

Principe, a 5-foot-9 guard from Kalamazoo and Mattawan High School, is off to a solid start this season as she helped lead the Bulldogs to a nice bounce-back effort in an upset of Gannon.

Our video series on Ferris State University women's basketball player Tricia Principe, a talented junior guard from Kalamazoo who prepped at Mattawan High School, continues.

I had a chance to sit down with Tricia on a couple of different occasions to talk about this new video series: "Pride and Passion."

In part three of this series, Tricia touches on her basketball roots and a bit on her experience playing ball at Mattawan High School.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Ferris Is No One-Man Team

Scouring Internet message boards oftentimes leads to some nuggets that catch my attention. That was the case as I visited a D2 message board with a discussion about regional and Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball.

Here is one excerpt that caught my eyes as a poster suggests that Ferris State University is just a one-man team of Justin Keenan, a preseason national player of the year:
LSSU should be a middle of the road GLIAC team, Ferris is dangerous mostly due to Keenan, but he is just one guy. I could see them being a 3rd place team, with competitive games against the top 2 when they play. With Hillsdale I think they will be another middle of the road GLIAC team, I watched their game against GV last year online and it seemed that they lacked athletes, but were really good shooters behind the arc. Still, the main powers are GVSU and Findlay, and I am pretty excited about our team this year, though I hope we can get back ex-Wolverine K'Len Morris and Mike Pryz pretty soon against NKU and St. Josephs for the revenge game.
I think this is an interesting post (not just for the fact that he/she has essentially given first and second place presumably to Findlay and Grand Valley) because the poster seems to think Ferris is just a one-man team (a misguided notion to say the least).

This year, in particular, the success of the Bulldogs is built on more than just Keenan's play (as improved as it is this season and as much as he will likely have an All-American season).

The additions of Jerrell Sanders, Kenny Brown, DeMarco Sanders and Brandyn Mungo have already or likely will pay off by the end of the season.

Returners like Dontae Molden and Daniel Sutherlin, in particular, have improved in the off season. Matt DeHart and Darien Gay remains solid, Lou Williams looks improved and this team in general looks improved.

Anyone believing the Bulldogs are a one-man team will be in for a rude awakening.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Ferris Gets Big Upset Win Over 15th-Ranked Gannon

One had to wonder how Ferris State University would bounce back from its tough season-opening loss to Edinboro on Saturday afternoon - with a game against 15th-ranked Gannon set for Sunday.

Well, the Bulldogs bounced back nicely as Tricia Principe scored 25 points to lead Ferris to an 80-71 upset of the nationally-ranked Lady Knights in Jim Wink Arena to close out competition at the two-day Bulldog Classic.

"We came out with a lot more confidence and executed our game plan today," said Ferris head coach Tracey Dorow said. "We shot a very high percentage because we kept attacking and weren't on our heels like we were yesterday.

"Our kids never stopped believing that they could step back up and get it done and that's a sign of a mature team," she added.

It was a nice bounce-back win indeed as the Bulldogs got off to a hot start and held on for a nice win against a Gannon team that graduated some quality players from the 2009-10 season, but is still awfully good.

Tiara Adams added 11 points and eight rebounds in the winning effort for Ferris.

Ferris, now 1-1 on the season, heads south for a two-game road trip as it is at Lewis University (Nov. 23), in Romeoville, Ill., and St. Joseph's College (Nov. 24), in Rensselaer, Ind.

These are important regional games and the Bulldogs certainly want to have success against these two opponents.

HOCKEY: Ferris Earns Much-Needed Success Against Broncos With Win And Tie

Ferris State's Eric Alexander (17) gets hit against the boards during Saturday's home game in Big Rapids against 16th-ranked Western Michigan in Ewigleben Ice Arena. (Ed Hyde, FSU Photographic Services)

Ferris State University
had a solid weekend of college hockey as it hosted nationally-ranked Western Michigan University, it's U.S. 131 rival in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association.

The Bulldogs of head coach Bob Daniels picked up a 3-1 win on Friday, but had to settle for a 2-2 tie (with a shootout loss) on Saturday evening in Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids.

A win and a tie against Western, ranked 16th, is a successful weekend for the Bulldogs who made life tough on first-year Broncos head coach Jeff Blashill, a former FSU goaltender and assistant coach.

This was a much-needed productive weekend for the Bulldogs coming off the disappointment the week prior with two shutout losses (1-0, 4-0) in the Upper Peninsula's Sault Ste. Marie to Lake Superior State University.

Tuesday, Ferris travels to East Lansing to take on No. 17 Michigan State University in a 7:08 p.m. contest in Munn Ice Arena.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY: Team Earns Bid To Nationals; Muir Wins Regional

Ferris State University knew it would need a banner effort to earn a trip to the NCAA Division II National Championships, for the third straight season, and that is precisely what the team got over the weekend in Louisville, Ky.

Ferris totaled 79 points to place second in the region behind team NCAA Division II Midwest Region champion Grand Valley State University, which totaled 26 points on Saturday (Nov. 20).

The FSU men's cross country squad concluded its 2010 season with a 12th-place finish (324 points). The Grand Valley men won the regional with 21 points.

The top individual finisher in the regional was Ferris standout senior Tina Muir (pictured), who placed first for the second consecutive year. Muir, running strong for the Bulldogs, finished in 21:05.96 on the 6K course at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park and finished nearly five seconds ahead of second-place finisher Katherine McCarthy of Grand Valley.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Ferris Earns Another Key Regional Win; Opens Season 3-0

Ferris State University center Justin Keenan (40) spins baseline as he prepares to go up toward the basket against the Lewis University Flyers on Saturday afternoon in Jim Wink Arena. (Ed Hyde, FSU Photographic Services)

It may seem early, but Ferris State University's 3-0 start is built on the strength of two quality regional wins against St. Joseph's, on Monday, and this past weekend, over Lewis.

Ferris remained unbeaten thanks to a 64-61 win Saturday afternoon in Jim Wink Arena against the visiting Flyers, a regional rival. These wins against the Pumas and Flyers could pay off for the Bulldogs by the end of the season (presuming Ferris takes care of business, as expected, in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference).

"We played hard and certainly did some foolish things, but this group of guys kept on fighting," said Ferris head coach Bill Sall said. "It easily could have turned into a loss, but we got a victory."

As always, the Bulldogs were led by a monster effort from senior center Justin Keenan, who was superb as he put up 25 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in 37 minutes. Adding a mid-range jumper to his arsenal has made Keenan virtually unstoppable so far this season.

He was the only Ferris player tor each double digits in the scoring column although Jerrell Sanders and Dontae Molden were close with eight points apiece. Matt DeHart added six, Kenny Brown and Lou Williams each had five, Daniel Sutherlin scored four and Darien Gay put up three.

Ferris did rely heavily on Keenan, but there's no point in going away from what's working as the 6-foot-7 Grand Rapids native connected on 7-of-14 shots from the floor and hit all 11 of his free throws to lead his team to the win.

The Bulldogs also showed an ability to come from behind as they did Saturday. Lewis owned a four-point lead with 4:19 to play, but the Bulldogs rallied thanks to four clutch free throws from Keenan, a jumper from Keenan, a couple of big rebounds from Williams and a triple from Brown.

Lewis was led by Jeron Lee, who came off the bench to score 18 points and Dennis Thomas Jr. who scored 14.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Ferris Has Work To Do, But It's Early

Ferris State University officially opened its women's basketball season during day one of the Bulldog Classic in Jim Wink Arena on Saturday (Nov. 20).

The Bulldogs dropped a 69-60 decision to Edinboro (Pa.) to begin the season 0-1 in spite of a 21-point effort from guard Tricia Principe, who was recognized before the game for leading the NCAA (Division II) in free throw percentage last season. Principe hit 8-of-12 shots from the floor, 3-of-4 from the 3-point arc and grabbed five rebounds as she logged 31 minutes.

"They outscrapped us in every area and we didn't maintain our composure," Ferris head coach Tracey Dorow said. "They pressed us the whole game and we didn't attack it and seemed very timid. They forced us to rush into things and we didn't play smart today," she added.

Becci Houdek added 17 points, seven rebounds and seven assists while Tiara Adams recorded a double-double effort as she scored 10 points and pulled down 12 rebounds.

Edinboro proved to be an athletic team that caused the Bulldogs some issues. The Fighting Scots grabbed 29 offensive rebounds and recorded 21 steals. Those hustle points, as Ferris head coach Tracey Dorow called them, helped fuel the Edinboro cause.

The Fighting Scots were led by Kiara Brown, who led all scorers in the game with 22 points while Micki Cerchiaro added 14.

The Bulldogs struggled with rebounding in the contest as Edinboro's athleticism caused problems. Ferris went small, but still had its challenges rebounding. The Fighting Scots had 21 more field-goal attempts than did the Bulldogs (76-55). So, even though Ferris shot a much better field goal percentage (45.5 to 30.3) the offensive rebounds and the steals led to extra opportunities for the visitors.

Sunday, Ferris returns to the court to take on nationally-ranked Gannon (Pa.) University which earned an 80-68 win over Northwood University in the other game of the Bulldog Classic.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Ferris Makes It Official With The Announcement Of Miller's Signing

Brownsburg High School (Ind.) guard Morgan Miller signs her national letter-of-intent to play college basketball at Ferris State University.

Ferris State University
women's basketball coach Tracey Dorow officially announced the signing of 5-foot-7 guard Morgan Miller, a native of Brownsburg, Ind.

Miller, playing for a very good Brownsburg High School squad that is state ranked in Indiana (where there is no shortage of good competition), comes in as a guard capable of handling the ball well and distributing it to shooters and scorers.

"Morgan is a combo guard who is a physical defender and an aggressive offensive player," Dorow said as she announced the signing. "She's fantastic at getting to the paint to score or distribute the basketball.

"Morgan plays regularly against the strongest competition in Indiana and she understands what needs to be done for her team to be successful," added Dorow.

Although she has the ability to distribute the basketball, Dorow thinks Miller can be a guard who should be able to put some points on the scoreboard.

"She will be more of a scoring threat in our system than a pass-first point guard," said Dorow. "Her determination and hard work will help ease the transition to the collegiate game. We're thrilled she's now a Bulldog for life, as her high school mascot is also the Bulldogs."

Here is another interesting footnote on the signing of Morgan Miller:
Miller's high school coach is Amy Brauman, who played college basketball with Dorow at NCAA Division I Illinois State.

"It's amazing that we both will have had the blessing to work with Morgan," Dorow said. "I have a lot of respect for Amy as a person, player and now as a coach, who has introduced me to a quality kid and a bonafide player."
Miller looks to be another fine addition to the Ferris roster as Dorow puts together a strong and big recruiting class.

CROSS COUNTRY: Men's And Women's Team To Compete Today In Regionals

It's that time of the year for the Ferris State University men's and women's cross country teams as they are in Louisville, Ky. to compete in the 2010 NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Championships today (Nov. 20).

The regional is being hosted by Bellarmine University of the Great Lakes Valley Conference at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer Park. The men's 10K race begins at 11 a.m. followed by the women's 6K race at 12 p.m.

This race should be a showcase for the women's cross country team which is ranked eighth in the latest United States Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II National Rankings and second in the Midwest Regional rankings. Under head coach Steve Picucci, both teams have worked hard to be well prepared to run their best races at this time of the year.

We're all looking forward to the results as the women's team, led by standout Tina Muir (pictured) looks to again prove worthy of its regional and national rankings and the men's team continues to battle to earn a place among the best in the region.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Tricia Principe Video Series Continues

Our video series on Ferris State University women's basketball player Tricia Principe, a talented junior guard from Kalamazoo who prepped at Mattawan High School, continues.

I had a chance to sit down with Tricia on a couple of different occasions to talk about this new video series: "Pride and Passion."

As part of this series, Tricia's personality will come out as she begins and progresses through this season - one she hopes will be a renaissance in women's basketball at FSU. In this second installment, Tricia talks about the team being ready to start the season this weekend at home.

This series will be a nice opportunity to find out what goes on in the minds of student-athletes through a first-hand perspective.

This first installment, a shorter segment, Tricia discusses what she liked about Ferris and what made her choose to bring her basketball talents and academic pursuits to FSU.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Ferris Signs 6-10 Middleville Native Jared Stolicker

An athletic 6-foot-10 post player that is well schooled and can run the floor is a great catch as Ferris State University men's basketball head coach Bill Sall knows all too well.

The Bulldogs went into the Grand Rapids area to recruit and sign Jared Stolicker, a 6-10 post, who is a native of Middleville who is prepping at Thornapple-Kellogg High School. Last season, Stolicker earned all-state honors as he averaged 15.8 points, 15.8 rebounds and 4.8 blocked shots as a junior.

"We're ecstatic to add Jared and really looking forward to having him on campus next year," said Ferris head coach Bill Sall said. "He's a big guy who runs well and is a tremendous rebounder that gets up and down the floor. He's been well-coached at the high school level and we're excited to sign him early."

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Ferris Secures Commitment From Brownsburg (Ind.) Guard Morgan Miller

BROWNSBURG, Ind. - Ferris State University has earned a commitment from Brownsburg (Ind.) High School guard Morgan Miller, a 5-foot-7 playmaker.

Here is what Miller's head coach, Amy Brauman, had to say on the BHS Web site about the announcement of the commitment to play college basketball at Ferris.

"Morgan has developed a great work ethic at BHS - both on the court and in the classroom – which will be a huge asset to her as she begins her collegiate career," Brauman said. "I know Morgan will do a great job at Ferris State. We will truly miss her, but we are thrilled that she will remain a Bulldog at FSU!"

Here is what the Indianapolis Star had written in one of its blogs:
-Brownsburg girls basketball player Morgan Miller has signed her letter of intent to play at Ferris State University (a Division II school in Big Rapids, Mich.), according to the Bulldogs’ athletic department. Miller, a 5-7 senior point guard, averaged 4.4 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.6 assists last season, and is one of four returning starters to this year’s fourth-ranked Bulldogs (1-0).
Ferris, under head coach Tracey Dorow, looks poised to bring in a large recruiting class for the 2011-12 season.

HOCKEY: Ferris Secures Commitment From Defenseman Simon Denis

KEARNEY, Neb. - It's truly recruiting season at Ferris State University on the hockey ice as the Bulldogs have secured another commitment.

The latest commitment for the Bulldogs ice hockey team is Tri-City Storm (Neb.) defenseman Simon Denis, a native of Burnaby, British Columbia. Last year, Denis played for the Burnaby Express of the BCHL where he totaled six goals and 23 assists in 60 games. Through 10 games this season, for Tri-City, Denis has five assists.

"I really enjoyed my trip out to Ferris. It felt like the right fit for me, and a place that I was wanted for next season," Denis said in a story written by Our Sports Central. "They are a program that is on the rise, and a place that I will have the opportunity to compete for a championship."

Denis, 19, stands 5-foot-10 and weighs 170 pounds.

Denis will be joined at Ferris State University by Storm teammate Dominic Panetta who is also committed to the Bulldogs. Additionally, Waterloo Black Hawks goaltender C.J. Motte plans to join the Ferris program.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Ferris Gets Commitment From Okemos Center Hannah Hoffman

The Lansing State Journal and other mid-Michigan media outlets are reporting the commitment of 6-foot-3 Okemos High School basketball player Hannah Hoffman to take her game to the college level at Ferris State University.

During the 2009-10 season, Hoffman she earned Class A all-area honorable mention recognition last season. In addition to her skills on the basketball court, Hoffman also is an all-area track thrower and volleyball player in the Lansing region.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: This Is A Big Stretch For Ferris State Coming Up

Ferris State University's men's basketball team has an important stretch of games coming up this weekend against regional opponents.

Now, these games may not seem like a big deal now, but they could be (and likely will be) by the end of the season. Monday, Ferris hosts St. Joseph's College, Saturday it hosts Lewis and then it travels to Owensboro, Ky. for two more regional contests against Drury University (Nov. 26) and Kentucky Wesleyan College (Nov. 27).

That is a rough stretch of games within a two-week period. The Bulldogs, being led this season by a new-and-improved Daniel Sutherlin (pictured) among others, need to do well in these games to beef up its regional resume for tournament time (even though that seems a long time from now).

HOCKEY: Two Tough Defeats For Ferris Hockey Team

This past weekend was a tough one at work for Ferris State University's hockey team as it took on Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie.

The host Lakers swept the 20th-ranked Bulldogs in a Central Collegiate Hockey Association series in Taffy Abel Ice Arena. Lake State won the opener 1-0, on Friday, and then bounced back to score a 4-0 victory in the series finale on Saturday in Sault Ste. Marie.

It's a tough series for the Bulldogs who were just hitting the spotlight of the country with a national ranking. On the other hand, this series also is a reminder that the CCHA championship race is a long one that (as the old saying goes) is a marathon rather than a sprint.

The Bulldogs of head coach Bob Daniels will probably lose that national ranking, but don't sweat it too much. There will be more than enough opportunities for Ferris to get back on its skates and back to those winning ways.

In fact, this weekend is the first of such opportunities with Western Michigan University (nationally ranked) coming to Big Rapids featuring the return of former Ferris goaltender and assistant coach Jeff Blashill, the first-year head coach of the Broncos. Both games begin at 7:05 p.m. (Friday and Saturday).

FOOTBALL: Tough Way To End The Season For Schneider

Ferris State University quarterback Tom Schneider's toughness credentials have probably never been questioned.

He went down hard, with what he has indicated to be a fractured ankle, during Saturday afternoon's football season finale (a 41-35 loss) at Northwood University in Midland.

From the press box, my radio partner (Rob Bentley) and I both noticed the severity of the injury and the amount of pain that was obvious with Schneider.

He did not return to the game after that injury late in the first half as Michael Buday stepped in to lead the team through the rest of the first half and all of the second half.

It was a tough physical ending to the season for Schneider, but there is no doubt that this is a true leader for the Bulldogs who should be back and ready to lead the team in 2011.

FOOTBALL: Ferris State-Northwood Video Highlights

MIDLAND - Here are some video highlights from the Ferris State University-Northwood University football game on Nov. 13 in Big Rapids at Hantz Stadium.

Check out some of the game's highlights.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Taking A Look At St. Joseph's, Ferris' Next Opponent

Ferris State University is in store for some tough competition as it welcomes St. Joseph's College to Big Rapids for a regional contest in Jim Wink Arena Monday night at 7:30 p.m.

The Pumas were ranked 19th in the nation in the NABC Division II Coaches Preseason Poll and coming off a banner season during which they finished 20-12 and advanced to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight.

That's not too shabby at all for a team that will present a formidable challenge for the Bulldogs Monday evening in Michigan.

This season, St. Joseph's has three starters and 12 letterwinners in all back. The returners for the Pumas are highlighted by strong guard play in the form of junior Dayvon Sloan, who averaged 11.5 points last season; Phillip Collins, who averaged 10.2 points and 4.8 rebounds; and Michael Horton, who averaged 7.1 points and four assists.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: New Video Series Featuring FSU Standout Guard Tricia Principe

Today I begin a new video series on Ferris State University women's basketball player Tricia Principe, a talented junior guard from Kalamazoo who prepped at Mattawan High School.

I had a chance to sit down with Tricia on a couple of different occasions to talk about the video series "Pride and Passion."

In this continuing series Tricia will talk about topics such as what brought her to Ferris, the Grand Valley State University-Ferris angle within her family, what motivates her, her academic pursuits and more during the course of the 2010-11 season. As part of this series, Tricia's personality will come out as she begins and progresses through this season - one she hopes will be a renaissance in women's basketball at FSU.

This video series will be a nice opportunity to find out what goes on in the minds of student-athletes through a first-hand perspective.

This first installment, a shorter segment, Tricia discusses what she liked about Ferris and what made her choose to bring her basketball talents and academic pursuits to FSU.

FOOTBALL: Ferris Falls 41-35 To Northwood In Season Finale

MIDLAND - Ferris State University's football team entered Hantz Stadium eager to earn a road win over Northwood University to secure a winning record for the 2010 season.

The winning season wasn't meant to be for the Bulldogs.

In a high-scoring affair, it was Northwood which scored late in the fourth quarter to escape with a 41-35 win over the Bulldogs in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference battle that served as the regular-season finale for both teams. With the loss, the Bulldogs end the season with a record of 5-6 overall and 5-5 in the GLIAC while Northwood ends up at 5-6 overall and 5-5 in the conference standings.

"The beginning of the game it was exciting we were rolling the intensity level was right there and everything was happening," Ferris head coach Jeff Pierce said after the game as he walked off the turf at Hantz Stadium. "It was one of those situations where we were going to take care of business and put it away and then they came back."

NU won with 459 yards of total offense to 431 for the Bulldogs in a game that was nothing short of an offensive display.

Ferris had to play the end of the first half and all of the second half without the services of Tom Schneider, the starting quarterback, who was injured and did not return. Michael Buday entered the game and finished with 197 passing yards on 16-of-24 passes with a touchdown and an interception. Schneider had completed 5-of-6 passes for 55 yards.

"Losing Tom didn't help matters, but we were trying to manage the game and give Mike an opportunity to come in and not put him in some critical situations and he did a nice job," Pierce said.

Senior receiver Chris Wilson had seven catches for 123 yards with a touchdown while Damien Miller had five receptions for 65 yards.

Skyler Stoker led the Bulldogs in rushing with 49 yards while Aaron Olman, playing in his final game, rushed for 41 yards.

Defensively, Matt Ryan led Ferris with 12 total tackles while Jordan Morgan added seven.

For the Timberwolves, quarterback Aaron Shavers was a one-man wrecking crew as he rushed for 137 yards on 16 carries with two touchdowns and passed for 93 yards with two touchdowns.

"They came back on us and the game came down to a shootout at the end," Pierce said. "That is so disappointing we were not able to win it but that is what I enjoy about working with this team is that they continue to work hard. Just about every football game except one has come down to the wire and I don't think the struggles in the second half have come down to any lack of effort."

The Bulldogs led 14-0 and 28-14 in the game, but each time the Timberwolves roared back and ultimately took the lead for good.

Check back for more information on the Ferris-Northwood game later.

The Ferris State University volleyball team got its post-season run off to a nice start on Thursday evening in Detroit.

The Bulldogs, seeded fifth in the 2010 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament, needed four sets to knock off host and fourth-seeded Wayne State University in a match played at the Matthaei Center in Detroit.

Ferris won its seventh consecutive match by scores of 25-22, 22-25, 25-19, 25-23 over the host Warriors in a tournament quarterfinals contest. Ashley Huntey had 13 kills while Arielle Goodson tallied 12 in the victory.

The other semifinal-round match pits No. 2 seed Northern Michigan University taking on No. 3 Grand Valley State University at 7:30 p.m. The championship match will be held this Sunday (Nov. 14) starting at 4 p.m.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Ferris Secures Commitment Of Mavis, Accorrding To Herald-Palladium

Ferris State University, according to an article published by the Herald-Palladium of St. Joseph, has secured the commitment of Katie Mavis for its women's basketball program.

Long-time FSU head coach Tracey Dorow (pictured), who is a native of St. Joseph and enjoyed a lot of prep basketball success in her hometown, has reportedly secured a commitment from someone in a place that is quite familiar to her.

Here is an excerpt from the Herald-Palladium article:

Mavis has excelled in volleyball, basketball and softball for the Bears, but chose to play basketball in college.

"It's been my dream since I was little to play at the next level," she said. "Basketball's been my favorite since I was in elementary school."

Ferris State is coached by Tracey Dorow, the daughter of former St. Joseph girls basketball coach Rick Bloodworth. Mavis said that connection and a strong performance at the team's camp led her to choosing to play for the Bulldogs.

Mavis added that she could play either guard position.

"Working with Katie for a number of years, it's great to see her realize one of her goals," St. Joseph girls basketball coach Jeff Wallace said. "It's a testament to her work ethic. She came in as a pure natural athlete and leaves as a player."

Keep checking back for more information on this future Bulldog women's basketball player.

SOFTBALL: Herald-Palladium Reports On Commitment Of Wittman To Join Sister At Ferris

The Herald-Palladium newspaper of St. Joseph has an article that has announced the signing of Colby Wittman to play softball at Ferris State University (to follow in the steps of her older sister, Alex, who currently competes on the diamond for the Bulldogs.

Here is an excerpt from the Herald-Palladium article discussing Wittman's decision to take her game to Ferris at the college level to join her sister in crimson and gold:

Wittman has been a standout at catcher for St. Joseph.

"She's the general of our field," (St. Joseph softball coach Jeff) Luckritz said. "She does a great job motivating the players. I'm sure that's something that Ferris was looking at, her leadership ability."

Wittman will join her older sister Alex at Ferris State, and said that was a big factor in her choice.

"It's been my passion since I was a little kid, and the chance to play another four years is a great one," Wittman said.

Sounds like Colby will be a welcomed addition to the Ferris State softball family.

HOCKEY: Ferris Getting Set To Take On Lake Superior

Ferris State's Brett Wysopal (27) has been a key component of the Bulldogs' success during his time in the crimson and gold of FSU. (Ed Hyde, FSU Photographic Services)

Coming off a successful start to the season, in the face of tough competition, Ferris State University now gets an interesting test on the road this weekend in Central Collegiate Hockey Association play in Sault Ste. Marie.

The Bulldogs battle Lake Superior State University during a two-game series with both games set to begin at 7:05 p.m. in Taffy Abel Arena.

Ferris now is ranked 20th in the nation by U.S. College Hockey Online and Inside College Hockey. With that ranking comes expectations for the Bulldogs who are on the road for their first true series (FSU did face Michigan in Yost Ice Arena during a home-and-home series).

Ferris enters this two-game series with a record of 5-3-2 overall and 2-2-2-2 in the CCHA while Lake Superior comes in at 3-5-2 overall and 1-4-1-0 in the league.

While the Bulldogs are coming off a win and a tie (with a shootout victory) against No. 1 Miami University, the Lakers enter this series coming off a split against Northern Michigan University. LSSU lost 4-1, but bounced back to win 3-1.

The scoring leader for the Lakers are senior forward Rick Schofield, who has four goals and eight assists for 12 points and sophomore forward Domenic Monardo has five goals and five assists with 10 points. Between the pipes, Brian Mahoney-Wilson is 1-4-1 overall with a 3.99 goals against average and .874 saves percentage while freshman Kevin Kapalka is 2-1-1 overall with a 2.99 goals against average and a .887 saves percentage.

Against Lake Superior, Justin Menke has a goal and three assists during his career, Zach Redmond has two goals with two assists and Mike Embach has two goals with an assist. Redmond is out for likely the next few weeks with an injury, but is expected to return.

FOOTBALL: Ferris Set To Take On Northwood In Season Finale

Ferris State University is set to enter its season-ending contest against Northwood University on Saturday afternoon at Hantz Stadium in Midland at 12 p.m.

The Bulldogs enter this game at 5-5 overall and 5-4 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference while the Timberwolves host Ferris at 4-6 overall and 4-5 in the league.

"We want to let seniors leave their careers and this season with a good taste in their mouths and to see them go out as winners," Ferris head coach Jeff Pierce said as he referenced a senior class that includes Keenan Bowman, Brian Bush, Leon Curry, Jacob Moreno, Aaron Olman, Matt Ryan, Matt Schuelke, Scott Shattuck, Joe Voiles and Chris Wilson. "It puts us over the hump with a winning season and that is important also. We want to finish strong."

The game is an important one for an FSU team eager to finish its season with a victory to preserve a winning record overall and in league play.

After winning five straight games, the Bulldogs now have lost four straight as they prepare to take on the host Timberwolves.

Three of the last four games have been painful ones for Ferris. That four-game stretch includes a 22-20 loss to Northern Michigan University, on Oct. 16; a 37-33 loss to the University of Indianapolis, on Oct. 30; and a 28-16 loss to Michigan Tech University, on Nov. 6.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: The Controversy Surrounding Sanders' Apparent Game-Winning Shot

Ferris State University's Jerrell Sanders elevates for what everyone thought was the game-winning jump shot. The shot was ultimately waved off and Indiana University went on to win the game in overtime.

The above image of what the shot taken by Ferris State University's Jerrell Sanders has created a growing controversy.

Bulldog fans believe the image above shows proof that Sanders did indeed get the shot off with 0.4 seconds to play (which would have made it a legal shot and the game winner).

"It was probably a fingertip away," Ferris head coach Bill Sall said, about the potential game-winner from Sanders. "We were going to win the game, but the momentum completely changed. Either we were going to win the game right there on the buzzer or we were not going to get it done."

It was a tough pill to swallow for the Bulldogs, but a valiant effort against a Big Ten Conference opponent on the road in historic Assembly Hall.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Ferris Pleased For Opportunity To Play Hoosiers In Indiana

Ferris State University men's basketball head coach Bill Sall was thrilled with the opportunity to compete against a Division I program like Indiana University.

The Bulldogs suffered a 78-65 overtime loss to the Hoosiers.

"First, I want to thank (Indiana University men's basketball head) Coach (Tom) Crean for inviting us down here," Sall said. "It was absolutely a thrill to come down here and play in Assembly Hall. "We played quite good basketball for a long period of time, but shot 20-of-38 from the free throw line and turned it over 25 times. Last time I checked that makes it kind of difficult to win."

Indeed. Free throws are going to be important for this team as Coach Sall mentioned. If the Bulldogs convert a decent percentage in the game they likely win.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Ferris Fights Hard, But Falls To Division I Hoosiers In OT

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Ferris State University gave it a heck of a run before it dropped a 78-65 overtime decision to Division I Indiana University in Assembly Hall on the IU campus in front of a crowd of 14,928.

The Bulldogs led for a large chunk of the second half before the Hoosiers rallied late to tie the score. Jerrell Sanders, a junior forward for Ferris, hit a shot late in the second half, but the officials waved off his buzzer-beater attempt.

The game went into overtime where the Hoosiers opened up with the first 12 points of the extra session before Ferris finally scored. The Bulldogs fought back, but struggled to fully bounce back -- especially with the loss of standout big man Justin Keenan, who fouled out in regulation.

Keenan had a strong game with 21 points and six rebounds to lead the Bulldogs. Keenan, the Grand Rapids native, knocked down 7-of-12 shots from the floor and 7-of-13 from the free throw line. Junior point guard Kenny Brown finished with 18 points along with three rebounds and three steals. Sanders had nine points and 10 rebounds while Daniel Sutherlin added seven points and four rebounds.

Ferris led by as many as 13 points (with 7:30 to go in the second half) before the Hoosiers rallied late to tie the score and force OT.

The Bulldogs open the regular season on Saturday night against Division III Calvin College beginning at 7:30 p.m. in Jim Wink Arena.

HOCKEY: Ferris Enters National Rankings At 20th

Well, we pretty much knew it was merely a matter of time before Ferris State University's hockey team slipped into the national college hockey rankings this season.

After beating and tying top-ranked Miami University, over the weekend, the Bulldogs enter the national rankings in two of the national college hockey polls. Head coach Bob Daniels and his Ferris hockey squad is listed 20th in the country by both U.S. College Hockey Online (USCHO) and Inside College Hockey.com.

Ferris currently is 5-3-2 overall and 2-2-2-2 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association after a 3-2 win over Miami followed up with a 1-1 tie (with a shootout victory) in Big Rapids at Ewigleben Ice Arena.

The Bulldogs, led by standout defenseman Zach Redmond (pictured), continue CCHA competition this weekend in Sault Ste. Marie as Ferris takes on Lake Superior State University in a two-game series with both contests set to begin at 7:05 p.m.

HOCKEY: Ferris State Enjoys A Strong Weekend With Five Points Against Top-Ranked Miami

Ferris State University's Scott Wietecha (3) skates with the puck during action over this past weekend against top-ranked Miami University in Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids. (Ed Hyde, FSU Photographic Services)

Ferris State University
has had its share of successes against Miami University, the top-ranked team in the nation, during the last couple of seasons.

As a result, the Bulldogs of head coach Bob Daniels have earned a degree of respect from the RedHawks that is mutual. As part of its history of good and solid competition with Miami, Ferris skated to a 3-2 win and a 1-1 tie (with a Saturday shootout victory).

Thanks to its productive weekend, Ferris earned five of a possible six points against the RedHawks in a Central Collegiate Hockey Association race where points are so precious. Ferris has improved to 5-3-2 overall and 2-2-2-2 in the CCHA as it has survived a tough early portion of its 2010-11 schedule.

The superb play of goaltender Pat Nagle and the leadership and skill of star defenseman and team leader Zach Redmond, among many other Bulldogs who have performed at a high level this season, has elevated Ferris to a team that should be in line for a national ranking in the not-too-distant future.

This past weekend was a great one and an important one for the Bulldog hockey team as it prepares now for a road trip to Sault Ste. Marie to take on Lake Superior State University (Nov. 12,-13) in a two-game CCHA series.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Ferris Gets Ready To Take On Storied Indiana University Program

It will be an amazing night of college basketball for Ferris State University as it heads to Bloomington, Ind. to played the storied Indiana University Hoosiers in historic Assembly Hall on the IU campus.

The game will be played Monday night at 7 p.m. in Assembly Hall.

Head coach Bill Sall's Bulldogs, a squad led by Division II Bulletin Preseason National Player of the Year Justin Keenan, left Sunday afternoon en route to Bloomington to get a good night of sleep before going to work against the Hoosiers in this exhibition game that pits Division II against Division I. It's the season for such exhibition contests as a number of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference teams are facing Division I opponents like the University of Michigan, Michigan State University and Indiana.

The Hoosiers are coached by Tom Crean, who is in his third season. Crean is a native of Mount Pleasant and a former top assistant coach to current MSU head coach Tom Izzo. Crean also has head coaching experience from his days at Marquette University prior to taking his current position at IU of the Big Ten Conference.

This is the first meeting between the Bulldogs and Hoosiers.

A season ago, Indiana finished 10-21 overall and 4-14 in the Big Ten (10th place). Expect the Hoosiers to continue to improve under Crean and soon emerge as league championship challengers.

This is an exhibition game and Indiana will certainly be favored to win big. I know there are upsets from time to time (Grand Valley State and Findlay have scored notable ones), but they are pretty rare.

FOOTBALL: Ferris Falls To Michigan Tech

Ferris State University quarterback Tom Schneider, with help from Skyler Stoker (34) and Chris Wilson (12), runs with the ball versus Michigan Tech (Photo by Scott Whitney)

Saturday's 28-16 loss to Michigan Tech University was, in many ways, a microcosm of the things that have plagued Ferris State University's football team in each of its prior four defeats this season.

For much of the afternoon, the Bulldogs struggled with a series of miscues (botched extra point, missed field goal, missed scoring opportunities, an inability to get key stops and more). Ferris' mistakes and missed opportunities led to a fourth consecutive loss as the Bulldogs have gone from a contender for first place to desperately seeking a win to salvage a winning season overall.

"We faced a very good football team in Michigan Tech today and we knew that coming in," Ferris head coach Jeff Pierce said as his team dropped to 5-5 overall and 5-4 in the GLIAC and now needs a win over Northwood University to secure even a winning season. "We had a legitimate shot to win that game today and we had a lot of opportunities we just didn't capitalize on."

Ferris' inability to capitalize ultimately cost the program a third game (in the stretch of the last four) it could have and perhaps (some might argue) should have won. However, close simply does not count for much in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Offensively, Ferris quarterback Tom Schneider rushed the ball 13 times for 24 yards and two touchdowns. He completed 17-of-29 passes for 203 yards. Receiver Mike Ryan had eight catches for 97 yards and 117 yards of total offense in the game.

Defensively, linebacker Matt Ryan was again superb with 15 total tackles. Tackle Muneer Bawayeh had nine and with eight apiece were tackle Jacob Moreno and linebacker Mike Elias.

The individual statistics don't look too bad and some of the team statistics don't look horrible, but the final score is partly the product of a series of small breaks that added up to a tough loss.

Ferris is on the road in Midland at Northwood University on Saturday with kickoff slated for 12 p.m. from Hantz Stadium.
