VOLLEYBALL: Heitzman Brings Size, Athleticism, Local Flavor To Bulldogs

Ferris State University's volleyball program has never really been afraid to scour the local region for talent.

That strategy, once again, has paid dividends with Ferris being able to attract the 6-foot-1 Caroline Heitzman, a Newaygo native who preps at Fremont High School. Heitzman, who will join the program during the fall 2011 semester, was signed by the Bulldogs during the early period and is a welcomed addition to an FSU program that is on the rise in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference that is strong among its peers in Division II women's volleyball.

Heitzman received All-Great Lakes 8 Conference First-Team honors as a senior during her final campaign for the Packers. As team captain, she compiled 466 kills, 101 aces, 84 block solos, 45 block assists and 97 digs in 52 matches. She helped lead Fremont to a district tournament title and a regional runner-up finish in 2010.

"Caroline is an exciting addition to the Bulldog Volleyball Family," said Brandel-Wilhelm. "She's a tough competitor and an extremely hard worker. She has a lot of potential and we look forward to the opportunity in helping her develop."
