Ferris State's Justin Keenan tries to split a pair of Wayne State defenders during the GLIAC Men's Basketball Tournament championship game on Sunday afternoon at Jim Wink Arena in Big Rapids. (Ed Hyde, FSU Photographic Services)Ferris State University experienced the kind of heartbreak that could take some teams quite a while to recover from under the circumstances.
The Bulldogs, playing in the championship game of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Tournament, dropped a 73-71 decision to Wayne State University courtesy of a tip in with one second to go from Mike Hollingsworth in Jim Wink Arena in Big Rapids on Sunday afternoon.
Ferris fell in spite of a 26-point, 12-rebound effort from senior big man Justin Keenan, the GLIAC Player of the Year.
The win gives Wayne the GLIAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Tournament while the Bulldogs await word as to whether they will earn an at-large bid.
The NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Tournament will be held March 12-15 at a campus site to be determined.
Based on previous regional rankings, Ferris is expected to receive a national bid when the official announcement is made late Sunday night (March 6) on www.ncaa.com.
