MEN'S BASKETBALL: Scenes From A Day Off In Kentucky

Here are some photos shot by Ferris State University photographer Ed Hyde, who is following the Bulldog men's basketball team in Kentucky during their run through the NCAA Division II Midwest Region Tournament.

It was game on during the off day for team members as they took some time to unwind.

A player has to look good to feel good. Team members check out some of the latest styles while doing some shopping at a local mall.

Having a little fun for the camera.

Thomas Drew, Justin Keenan and Jerrell Sanders stroll through the mall.

  1. First off, I want to offer congrats to Ferris state for a good season.

Second, I wanted to ask Sandy something, out of curiousity. I'm a recent Ferris graduate, I live in Big Rapids and I have been following bulldogs men's basketball for quite sometime now. This is not me hating or anything but its just a obvious observation It seems that this 2010-11 has received alot of different media attention and promotion from you and the ferris state university campus with the blogs, tons of pictures, promotions for games, extensive coverage from season and ncaa tourney and stuff. Granted they won the north division championship and made it to the sweet 16 after not winning on since the 2004-05 team, however it strikes me puzzling that the 2003-2004 and 2004-05 team had great, outstanding players, record setters such as Dennis Springs and Corey and Carlton Epps, great role players in Terrance Shaw, Michael Daniels, Jefferey Shanahan, Willie Burrel (just to name a few). They won back to back North division title (2), made it to the sweet 16 and basically brought the program back from obscurity but for all there work, I personally don't feel they were giving the credit and coverage they deserved.
For example, the ncaa coverage of this team alone there were several links to different extensive different stories breaking down the tournament and behind the scene for this years bulldogs, radio promtion, 131 showdown, you name it. the 2004-05 teams did the same if not more and there was only a couple of links concerning ncaa, (I looked in archives). Heck it was like the whole tournament was covered in a few links but this year there was great detail coverage.
They were winning multiple titles but they didn't nearly receive the push, game promotions, and crowd support as this years team from you, media, athletic dept, and fans (they weren't even rolling out all the bleacher for the games!!!)

I was just wondering what you thought about this?? Im not trying to step on any toes or anything but fair is fair..is it not?

  2. Thanks for taking the time to write. I appreciate your thoughts and that you took the time to write them on the blog. That was really before blogging was as popular as it is now.

I will make a few points. I was not blogging at that time. I was writing sports for the local newspaper and offered extensive coverage of the men's basketball team. I actually went down to cover the team in the Sweet 116 in Findlay, Ohio when the Bulldogs played the Oilers. I wrote numerous feature stories, game previews, game stories and more. I made sure to cover every single home game when I worked for the newspaper and even a good number of the close road games (GVSU, Northwood, SVSU, etc.).

I am not sure who you are and I absolutely respect your write to privacy as well as your opinion. However, if you talk to the guys you listed above and if they are honest they will tell you that I wrote MANY stories that gave those teams coverage during those years.

In past years I spent more time doing feature stories interviewing guys and I didn't do nearly as much of that this year. Honestly, I probably, in some ways, provided less coverage this year than in some past years. I didn't preview nearly as many games as I used to preview.

    To be continued...

  3. It's difficult to compare eras. Today, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, websites and the Internet in general are used a lot more than they were even three or four years ago. So there may be some truth to what you say there, but I would tell you that from a newspaper standpoint we had tons of articles that were in the paper and we had radio coverage all season (which this year's team did not have until the very end of the season).
