FOOTBALL: Bulldogs Finally Get Spring Practice Started

BIG RAPIDS - Surrounded by hills of snow, at Top Taggart Field, Ferris State University's football team finally began its spring drills on Thursday afternoon.

The snow that covered Top Taggart Field earlier in the week was removed in time for Thursday's practice session in the stadium. With the snow pushed to the perimeter of the playing surface, the players and coaches were on the turf running through their drills without pads as they loosened up to begin spring practice.

Ferris head coach Jeff Pierce has an interesting mix of seniors and juniors who have been through a lot of battles to blend together with some up-and-comers looking to fill in roles vacated by seniors who exited the program at the close of the 2010 fall campaign.

One of the major things that the coaches drilled into the players, on day one of spring practice, was enthusiasm. With veteran leaders like quarterback Tom Schneider, receiver Mike Ryan, lineman Jordan Morgan and others, Ferris should have no shortage of players with experience, leadership and enthusiasm.

Offensive coordinator Chris Boden emphasized that to his unit one time in particular as he reminded them that the best teams are the teams with the most enthusiasm.

Defensive coordinator and assistant head coach Duane Wilson worked with his group and reminded them of the importance of hustling on the field and working hard through each drill.

Indeed, it was back to normal for the Bulldogs - at least for the spring. It's just the beginning of what will be a spirited spring of practice for Ferris.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Keenan Named National Division II Bulletin Player Of The Year

Ferris State University standout big man Justin Keenan just keeps adding to his list of accolades.

The Bulldog senior, a native of Grand Rapids who prepped at the city's Ottawa Hills High School, Keenan was named the Division II Bulletin National Player of the Year for his efforts on the hardwood this season as he led Ferris to a record of 24-8 and into the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division II Tournament. It is a well-deserved honor for a player who has worked tirelessly to become the premier player in Division II in men's baketball during his time at Ferris.

"As our Preseason Player of the Year, Justin was expected to have a great season and he certainly did," Division II Bulletin editor Gary Rubin said. "He was a force on both ends of the floor for a top caliber team. He is most deserving."

Keenan averaged 21.6 points and 9.7 rebounds to lead the Bulldogs this season through the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and into the national tournament. For Bill Sall, the head coach of the Bulldogs, the award is a much-deserved honor for Keenan and caps a brilliant season of college basketball for a player who has been a fixture in the middle of the team's lineup.

"This culminates Justin's outstanding career and is a direct result of all the hard work and dedication he's made over the last four years," Sall said. "We're extremely proud of all his accomplishments and this is one that few players ever get to the opportunity to receive. He's been a special player and helped lead us to great things this year along with his fellow seniors and teammates."

Keenan was joined on the Division II Bulletin All-America first team by Bloomfield's (N.J.) Greg Daye, Bellarmine's (KY.) Jeremy Kendle, West Liberty State (W.Va.) senior Corey Pelle and Rollins (Fla.) senior Nick Wolf.

SOFTBALL: Ferris' Home Opener Will Have To Wait A Little Longer

The home opener for Ferris State University's softball team will have to wait a little bit due to the snow and cold weather at the FSU Softball Field.

Ferris' scheduled home doubleheader against Davenport University, set for Tuesday (March 29) has been canceled due to the field conditions. The late snowstorm that hit the area recently set back the start of the home portion of the Bulldogs' softball schedule.

The Bulldogs of head coach Keri Becker did have a chance to open their Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schedule as they traveled to Ohio and competed against Lake Erie College, Ohio Dominican University and Ashland University. The Bulldogs took two against Lake Erie, split against ODU and dropped a pair to Ashland to begin the GLIAC 3-3 (the team is 6-12 overall).

Ferris will attempt to open the home schedule again on Thursday (March 31) when it is scheduled to host Aquinas College in a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Findlay's Niekamp Announces Retirement

This one caught me off guard, but long-time and highly-successful University of Findlay men's basketball coach Ron Niekamp has announced his retirement, according to the UF website.

Here is a portion of the article:

Ron Niekamp, the all-time leader in basketball victories at The University of Findlay, announced his retirement as men’s basketball coach on Monday, March 28, 2011 after 26 seasons at the helm of the Oilers program. Coach Niekamp will remain at UF however and serve as a full-time faculty member next fall in the department of Health and Human Performance.

In addition to teaching roles in physical education, Niekamp will help Findlay develop a certificate program in coaching as well as assist in the launch of a new business major in sports and event management.

“I am very appreciative that The University of Findlay has given me this opportunity, which enabled me to experience so many wonderful moments,” said Niekamp. “I have been a head coach for 39 years and it has been a great ride, but it's time to move on to the next phase of my life.”

Niekamp, who finishes his career with a 598-185 record, transformed Findlay’s men’s basketball program into a national power during his tenure and helped make Croy Gymnasium into one of the toughest venues for opponents to capture a victory.

“I want to personally thank coach Niekamp for his tremendous dedication and loyalty over the years,” said UF Director of Athletics, Steven Rackley. “He built what I feel is the premier Division II men’s basketball program in the country and he has always represented the school with class and dignity. Not only is he a great coach, but he is an excellent teacher and person as well. I am very proud of our program and Ron will definitely be missed.”

Coach Niekamp has an outstanding record that is second to few. He is to be commended for doing so much to build a strong college basketball program at Findlay.

He will not be easy to replace, but he has set the table for his successor.

BASKETBALL: Should GVSU Get All The Credit For The Success Of The 131 Showdown?

The 131 Showdown, Van Andel Arena, Grand Rapids

This morning, I was reading the Grand Rapids Press and came across an article written by Brian Van Ochten, who was going over some thoughts from this past basketball season.

I noticed this portion that caught my attention related to the 131 Showdown at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids on Jan. 29:
Best atmosphere: The entire Grand Valley State athletic department gets a standing ovation for creating an impressive mini-NCAA tournament setting for the inaugural "131 Showdown" on Jan. 29 at Van Andel Arena.

The spirited matchups featuring the men’s and women’s teams from Grand Valley and Ferris State attracted almost 6,000 fans and included cheerleaders, pep bands and an overtime finish for the men.

It’s just the beginning of more local college basketball downtown. Expect the Lakers to stage a second "131 Showdown" doubleheader -- against a different conference opponent -- at Van Andel Arena next season.
The only thing I would say is I have a hard time seeing all of the credit for the success of the event being given to the Grand Valley athletic department.

I think some people at Ferris deserve some credit as well for the success of the event for a lot of money and time invested in the event's success.

On a side note, the last sentence is interesting with the part about "a different conference opponent" for next season at Van Andel.

SOFTBALL: Ferris Picked Second In North Division Of GLIAC Preseason Poll

The Ferris State University softball team was picked to finish second in the North Division in the 2011 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Coaches Preseason Poll.

I wrote the previews of softball and baseball for the GLIAC. Here is the Ferris capsule I wrote for the preview:

2. Ferris State

Overview: Ferris State is entering its 2011 season with the motto, “unfinished business.” In 2010, the Bulldogs finished 26-16 overall and 17-9 in the conference and are hopeful that they can use the experience that has been gained the last few years to take the next big step to a conference championship and perhaps more this spring. Senior Lynsay Weaver and junior Makenzi Peterson, who batted .343 with 36 hits, return to help anchor the Ferris infield along with junior Chelsea Morris, sophomore Lindsey Pettit, sophomore Lainee Clay, junior Allison Webber and freshman Bianca Vasovski. In the outfield, Morgan Kramerich, a junior who batted .293 with 36 hits, returns to lead the way along with senior Colleen Roney. Stephanie Dusendang, a junior, is back for the Bulldogs along with younger players in Alex Wittman and Brittney Buti who expect to compete. Catcher Rachel Mueller will be the leader behind the plate backed up by Liz Hamming. The catchers will handle a pitching staff led by sophomore Dana Bowler (an eight-game winner last season), freshman Amy Dunleavy, and transfer Emily Carlson. The Bulldogs were picked second in the North Division in the preseason poll.

Coaching: Keri Becker is in her 14th season as head coach of the Bulldogs and owns a career record of 409-253-1.

2010 Record: 26-16 overall, 17-9 GLIAC

Noteworthy: Head coach Keri Becker is a three-time GLIAC Coach of the Year having won the award in 1997, 2003 and 2008. She served eight years (1992-00) in the United States Army Reserve and held the rank of sergeant.

FOOTBALL: Former Ferris Great Mo Harris Climbing The Coaching Ladder

It has probably been a long time since a lot of people familiar with the Ferris State University football program have heard the name Mo Harris.

Harris, a former standout Bulldog running back who still ranks a one of the all-time greats in school history, is in the news in his home state of Florida in Tampa, but as a coach:
Just one week after taking over the football program at Tampa Bay Tech, head coach Jayson Roberts has found the person he wants to lead his offense: Plant running backs coach Mo Harris.

Harris, who has been an assistant with the Panthers the past three seasons, takes over as TBT's offensive coordinator effective immediately, Roberts said.

Harris was part of Plant head coach Robert Weiner's staff for two of the Panthers' three state titles (2008 and 2009) and helped guide the career of Florida State-bound running back James Wilder, who rushed for 1,000-plus-yards the last two years.

Wilder's production represents the first time in Weiner's tenure that a running back produced 1,000 yard seasons. Harris also helped guide the development of University of Hawaii running back Allen Sampson, former Jacksonville University fullback Chris Hesson and current Panthers back Antonio Crawford.

...

In the early 1990s, Harris was a star running back for Jesuit under coach Dominick Ciao and, later, Hillsborough under Ear Garcia. Harris played his college football for Butch Jones at Ferris State (Mich.) University, where he still owns the school's career rushing record. Jones is now head coach for the Cincinnati Bearcats. Harris says he models much of his coaching philosophy from what he learned from Jones. And he says he has learned much from Weiner in three years at Plant.

Congratulations to Coach Harris on the promotion.

HOCKEY: Here Comes The BIG 10 Hockey Conference

We all knew it was coming, but not everyone seems to grasp the potential devastation of this move by the Empire ... er ... Big 10.

The Big 10 is planning to sponsor college hockey with Penn State adding the sport. The plan is to move forward with this Big 10 hockey league beginning with the 2013-14 season.

Needless to say (maybe for some people it is necessary to say) ... THIS IS HUGE news. Smaller programs like Ferris State University, Northern Michigan University, Lake Superior State University and others could be in serious trouble without guaranteed home games against schools like the University of Michigan and Michigan State University.

The Detroit Free Press has published statements released by MSU from Mark Hollis, the director of athletics, and Lou Anna Simon, the president of the university.

From Hollis: “We are excited about the launch of hockey in the Big Ten Conference. I believe that sponsoring men’s ice hockey will enhance the conference, its member institutions, and college hockey. Playing only 20 conference games will allow our programs to continue to play non-conference contests against in-state rivals, important tournaments like the Great Lakes Invitational, and a competitive national schedule.”

Comment: What Hollis is saying is that there are some open slots in the schedules of the soon-to-be-departed U-M, MSU and Ohio State. What he is not telling you is there is virtually no chance any of those schools will ever play a non-conference game in Ewigleben Ice Arena again. MSU may let schools like Ferris come to Munn Ice Arena once in a while, but that's it. What Hollis and Michigan want is to play a more national schedule where they will not be locked into trips to Big Rapids, Marquette and Sault Ste. Marie.
From President Simon: “When one considers the locations of the Big Ten universities, competing athletically on the ice is a natural next step for the conference. Our relationship with the Central Collegiate Hockey Association has been beneficial both in terms of athletics and academics, and we are pleased that we will continue to face off against CCHA teams in non-conference competition.”

Comment: Same as above ... the relationships will continue, but on a far smaller scale and with the advantages going to U-M and MSU. Ferris and others will have to play in Munn and Yost ice arenas (if they're lucky enough to get that chance) and will get no breaks on any calls in those facilities. This is the beginning of what could be some dark days in college hockey for the smaller schools.

HOCKEY: Wietecha To Take His Tough Defense To East Coast Hockey League

Scott Wietecha, who just finished his college hockey playing career at Ferris State University, signed a standard player contract with the Elmira (N.Y.) Jackals of the East Coast Hockey League last Friday (March 18).

Wietecha, the 6-foot-2 and 208-pound former Bulldog defenseman from Wolverine Lake, is set to compete for Elmira, an affiliate for both the National Hockey League's Anaheim Ducks and Ottawa Senators. Throughout his career at Ferris, Wietecha has been a quiet cornerstone of the success of the Bulldogs' defense.

Wietecha, who is tough as nails, totaled 14 points on two goals with a career season-best 12 assists in 39 outings during the 2010-11 season. He finished with a plus-five efficiency rating to go along with a career season-high 31 blocked shots and one power-play goal.

FOOTBALL: Bulldogs Likely To Add Preferred Walk On In Rockford's Griffis

Ferris State University's football recruiting process continues as the team continues to add depth to its roster for the 2011 fall campaign.

One of the familiar schools that traditionally has been good to the Bulldog football program over the years has been legendary head coach Ralph Munger's Rockford High School Rams.

It looks like the Bulldogs will be welcoming Rams' outside linebacker Mitch Griffis in the fall to campus.

From the Rockford Independent:
Rockford's football team held a news conference four weeks ago announcing the collegiate destinations of six seniors. Make that seven as senior outside linebacker Mitch Griffis accepted a preferred walk on offer from Ferris State University.

"I had talked to coach (Ralph) Munger about wanting to continue playing football in college," Griffis said. "And he called Ferris State and arranged a tryout for me with about 30 other players from around the Midwest. When it was over, they said they would call within a week to let me know if I had made it. But they called that night and told me the news that I had made the grade."

Griffis, the son of Rich and Gina Griffis, expects to play as a defensive end in the always competetive GLIAC. At 6-foot-4 and 205 pounds, he also realizes that he will have to get bigger. But he is highly appreciative to both Munger and Ferris State coach Jeff Pierce for the opportunity.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - It was a heartbreaking end to a season that filled so many with so much joy from start to finish.

The 2010-11 season came to an end for the Ferris State University men's basketball team as the Bulldogs dropped an 85-66 decision to Bellarmine University before a capacity crowd at Knights Hall in Louisville, Ky. Senior Darien Gay led the Bulldogs with 16 points and seven assists while fellow senior Justin Keenan added 15 points and six rebounds. Another senior, Matt DeHart, added 12 points, in the loss as he knocked down four triples in seven attempts.

Head coach Bill Sall's Bulldogs led 39-37 at halftime, but were outscored 48-27 in the second half by the Knights as they rode a wave of momentum and the emotion partially generated by the crowd.

"I couldn't be prouder of this group of seniors and what they accomplished this season," Sall said. "That's as good of a team as we've faced tonight, but we battled to the end."

With the loss, Ferris finishes the season with a record of 24-8.

Lou Williams is the team's fourth senior. Williams finished with two points and seven rebounds in his career finale.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Scouting Bellarmine

Bellarmine University has not risen to near the top of the national rankings in Division II for no reason.

The Knights come into Tuesday evening's NCAA Division II Midwest Region championship game with Ferris State University with a record of 29-2 overall and ranked second in the nation. Bellarmine punched its ticket to the regional title game with an 87-82 win over Northern Kentucky University on Sunday in the semifinal round before a packed house on their home floor (Knights Hall ... where the championship game will be played on Tuesday night).

Bellarmine lost to St. Catharine on Dec. 29 by a score of 79-74 and dropped a 94-86 decision to Kentucky Wesleyan on Feb. 19. That's it for losses this season.

The team's top scorer is Jeremy Kendle, who averages 17 points per game. Braydon Hobbs, Chris Dowe and Justin Benedetti average 13 points apiece while Luke Sprague averages 10.4 points.

The team rebounds by committee with a bunch of players averaging four to five rebounds.

Hobbs is the top assist man with 208 on the season. Interestingly enough, he ranks second on the team with 20 blocked shots and leads the team with 53 steals.

HOCKEY: Heartbreak For Ferris State With Season-Ending Loss To Western Michigan

Ferris State University played with a lot of heart, and took Western Michigan University to the limit on the road in hostile Lawson Ice Arena in Kalamazoo, but came up just short.

The Broncos advanced to Joe Louis Arena in Detroit for the final four of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association Tournament with a 5-4 overtime win over the Bulldogs Sunday in game three of their best-of-three second-round playoff series.

It was a bitter pill for the Bulldogs to swallow as Ferris came back from three goals down to tie the score at 4-4 only to fall in overtime at the hands of the host Broncos.

The loss ends the season for Ferris as it is unlikely to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Head coach Bob Daniels' squad finishes at 18-16-5 this season.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Bill Sall's Press Conference After Drury NCAA Tournament Game

competed against Drury University earlier this season on a neutral floor in Owensboro, Ky. at Kentucky Wesleyan University's Ownesboro Classic on Nov. 26.

The Bulldogs, ranked 24th in the season at the time, dropped an 88-72 decision to the Panthers at the Owensboro Sportscenter. Drury claimed a 38-34 lead at halftime and then took control as it scored the first 12 points of the second half to roll to the win in Kentucky.

Justin Keenan led the Bulldogs with 19 points as he played a good chunk of the game with foul trouble. Kenny Brown added 16 points, Daniel Sutherlin added 13 points and Darien Gay added eight points for Ferris.

Dennon Mitchell, coming in as a reserve, scored a game-high 21 points for Drury while Alex Hall dropped in 17 points and Jajuan Maxwell added 15 points.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Bulldogs Top Wayne; Advances To Regional Semis To Face Drury

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Thanks to a 31-point performance from Justin Keenan and a 27-point effort from Kenny Brown, Ferris State University defeated Wayne State University 90-88 in the first round of the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Tournament at Knights Hall in Louisville, Ky.

It was the first NCAA tournament win for the Bulldogs in six seasons. Ferris did not look like a team that was new to the experience as it performed well in a battle of two evenly-matched teams.

Brown was a huge part of the Bulldogs' success as he exploded for a season-best 27 points as he connected on 9-of-11 shots from the floor and connected 5-of-6 from outside the 3-point arc for Ferris as his red-hot shooting helped lift the Bulldogs in the second half.

Lou Williams contributed 11 points and six rebounds as his energy again paid dividends for the Bulldogs while Darien Gay added nine points.

Senior guard Bryan Smothers led Wayne with 25 points and five assists as he turned in another strong performance. The Bulldogs did a better defensive job on Mike Hollingsworth, who scored 12.

The Bulldogs will face Drury University in the semifinals at 5 p.m. on Sunday at Knights Hall in Louisville, Ky.

Here are some Bulldog Bites as compiled by Ferris Athletics Communications Director Rob Bentley: The Bulldogs dished out 14 assists to 13 for Wayne State ....... The lead changed hands five times and the score was also tied five times ...... Ferris had eight steals with Kenny Brown netting four ........ Ferris outscored WSU 38-36 in the paint and the Bulldog reserves managed 29 points compared to only 22 for the Warriors ...... The regional tournament is being hosted by top-seeded Bellarmine University ...... With the win, FSU is now the only remaining GLIAC member school in the eight-team regional tournament field.

SOCCER: Former Ferris Coach Pete Watkins Named New St. Mary's Men's Soccer Coach

SOFTBALL: Ferris Rained Out Thursday At Rebel Spring Games

Ferris State University was hoping to get that winning feeling going again on the softball diamond today, but games at the Rebel Spring Games were canceled due to rainy conditions in Kissimmee, Fla.

The Bulldogs (3-5) were scheduled to play Concordia-St. Paul (Minn.) and Shippensburg (Pa.) on Thursday (March 10), but the games will not be rescheduled.

Ferris is scheduled to return to the diamond Friday (March 11) to take on California (Pa.) in a 9 a.m. encounter before going up against Minnesota State at 1 p.m.

SOFTBALL: Ferris Drops Tough Decision To Bellarmine

During the spring trip, Ferris State University sophomore pitcher Dana Bowler is adding some thoughts about what is going on down in Florida.

Here are some of Dana's words from the Bulldogs' tough 5-4 loss to Bellarmine University on March 9:
"We were winning 4-3 going into the top of the 6th then we had a lightning delay for almost a half hour. They hit a 2 run homer in the top of the 7th and we couldn't score in the bottom."
Here is the boxscore from the game.

MEN'S BASKETALL: Bulldogs Will Need To Contain Speed, Quickness And Athleticism Of Wayne State

Ferris State's Lou Williams (21) goes up for the ball against Wayne State.

BIG RAPIDS - This rubber match between Ferris State University and Wayne State University on the hardwood in the NCAA Division II Midwest Region Tournament promises to be yet another hard-fought battle.

The Warriors come into this contest with a record of 22-7 overall and as tournament champions of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference thanks to a 73-71 victory over the Bulldogs (thanks to a tip in at the buzzer by the team's leading scorer, Mike Hollingsworth). Bryan Smothers, who is a top-notch guard, is a key player as well in the offense of the Warriors.

Hollingsworth leads Wayne in scoring at 16.1 points per contest for head coach David Greer, a top-notch mentor who is in his 10th season on the bench for the Warriors.

This is an intriguing matchup as Wayne brings the kind of speed, quickness and athleticism that few teams bring to the table against the Bulldogs.

Ferris has to keep Smothers under control and contained and do a good job of not letting Hollingsworth explode with his athleticism in transition and on the glass.

SOFTBALL: Bulldogs Have Tough Offensive Outing Against Northern Kentucky

Sophomore pitcher Dana Bowler tossed a three-hitter with six strikeouts in the 3-0 loss to Northern Kentucky. (Photo by Eric Carlson)

During the spring trip, Ferris State University sophomore pitcher Dana Bowler is adding some thoughts about what is going on down in Florida.

The Bulldogs had as tough game on March 9 against Northern Kentucky University as the team was held hitless against the Norse in the Sunshine State.

Here are Dana's words describing the game:
"Northern Kentucky scored 2 runs in the first inning and we never caught up. They ended up winning 3-0."
Here is the boxscore from the game.

SOFTBALL; Kramerich Off To A Solid Hitting Start This Spring For Bulldogs

Through the first six games of the season outfielder Morgan Kramerich is off to a hot start swinging the bast as she is hitting .417 with a team-best 10 hits.

Kramerich, a 5-foot-1 sophomore from Crest Hill, Ill., who is the centerpiece of the Bulldogs defense in the outfield, also has two doubles, one triple and three runs batted in for the Bulldogs.

Her contributions are going to be important from start to finish this season in what is likely to be a lead-off role all season long for head coach Keri Becker.

Through its first three games of the season, down in Florida, Ferris compiled a record of 3-3.

HOCKEY: Ferris Assistant Kaufman Highlighted In Kalamazoo Gazette Article

Ferris State University ice hockey assistant coach Mark Kaufman was highlighted in this article published in the Kalamazoo Gazette in anticipation of this weekend's Central Collegiate Hockey Association second-round series this Friday, Saturday and Sunday (if necessary) between the Bulldogs and Western Michigan University at Lawson Ice Arena in Kalamazoo (all games are scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

Here is an excerpt:
They will stand on opposite benches this weekend at Lawson Ice Arena, two assistant coaches looking for the most subtle ways to end the other’s season.

When the Central Collegiate Hockey Association quarterfinal series between Western Michigan University and Ferris State is done, the Broncos’ Pat Ferschweiler and the Bulldogs’ Mark Kaufman will resume a relationship more than 20 years in the making.

While much was made of WMU head coach Jeff Blashill, a Ferris State alumnus, facing his collegiate head coach in Bob Daniels when the teams met during the regular season, Ferschweiler and Kaufman go back even further.

SOFTBALL: Ferris Earns Win Over Nationally-Ranked Lewis

During the spring trip, Ferris State University sophomore pitcher Dana Bowler (pictured) is adding some thoughts about what is going on down in Florida.

The Bulldogs had an awesome upset victory over nationally-ranked Lewis University on March 7 in Florida during the Rebel Spring Games. It's always a big win against a great program like Lewis.

Here are Dana's words describing the game against a team from her home state of Illinois:
Lewis was a great victory for us though!!
It was extra sweet because Dana earned the win for the Bulldogs as Ferris picked up a victory that could pay dividends later in the season.

Here is the boxscore from the game.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Ferris' No. 6 Seed Might Be A Bit Low, But Helps GLVC Knock Out At Least One GLIAC School

Ferris State University makes it into the NCAA Division II Tournament for the first time since the 2005-06 season and will take on Wayne State University in the opening round of the tournament on Saturday (March 12).

The Bulldogs are the No. 6 seed while the Warriors are a No. 3 seed.

I think the No. 6 seed for Ferris is a bit low, but I can kind of (sort of) see the argument from the other side, too. Still, it's sad that the No. 2 team in the GLIAC Tournament (and No. 1 in the regular season) only warrants a six seed in the regional.

Of course, if the Bulldogs (22-7) had been seeded higher then it would have been harder for the powers that be to knock out one of the two GLIAC teams right off the bat by pitting them against each other in the first round.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Ferris Falls To Wayne In GLIAC Tournament Championship Game

Ferris State University
experienced the kind of heartbreak that could take some teams quite a while to recover from under the circumstances.

The Bulldogs, playing in the championship game of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Tournament, dropped a 73-71 decision to Wayne State University courtesy of a tip in with one second to go from Mike Hollingsworth in Jim Wink Arena in Big Rapids on Sunday afternoon.

Ferris fell in spite of a 26-point, 12-rebound effort from senior big man Justin Keenan, the GLIAC Player of the Year.

The win gives Wayne the GLIAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Tournament while the Bulldogs await word as to whether they will earn an at-large bid.

The NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Tournament will be held March 12-15 at a campus site to be determined.

Based on previous regional rankings, Ferris is expected to receive a national bid when the official announcement is made late Sunday night (March 6) on www.ncaa.com.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Ferris Earns Huge Win Over Michigan Tech In GLIAC Semifinals

Ferris State's Darien Gay fires a jump shot from long range over Michigan Tech's Jordan Reetz during competition on Saturday in the GLIAC Tournament semifinals round in Jim Wink Arena in Big Rapids. (Ed Hyde, FSU Photographic Services)

BIG RAPIDS - Anyone who knows much about the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball landscape knew that Ferris State University was in store for a tough contest against Michigan Tech University on Saturday afternoon in Wink Arena during the semifinal round of the league tournament.

The Bulldogs got all they wanted and then some before they emerged with a 73-64 win against the Huskies to advance to the championship game on Sunday at 2 p.m. against Wayne State University, which earned a 73-64 win over the University of Findlay.

Ferris needed all hands on deck as senior standout Justin Keenan got off to a slow start and was hampered by foul trouble. Keenan finished with nine points and four rebounds.

But, his teammates more than picked up the slack. In particular, Kenny Brown came off the bench to score 13 points and Daniel Sutherlin came off the bench to score 12. Matt DeHart, a starter, chipped in with 12 points.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Ferris Could Solidify Its Position In Regional Tournament Picture

The NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Men's Basketball Rankings are a roller coaster ride for a few of the teams involved.

Ferris State University
rose up high in the rankings (two No. 3) only to drop back to No. 6 after a loss to Grand Valley State University.

The Bulldogs have helped their cause with victories this week over unranked Saginaw Valley State University and unranked Wayne State.

Ferris now plays eighth-ranked Wayne State University in the GLIAC Tournament championship contest. The Warriors knocked off No. 3 University of Findlay on Friday in the GLIAC Tournament semifinals.

The Bulldogs would obviously solidify their NCAA position with a victory on Sunday in the 2 p.m. GLIAC Tournament championship game against Wayne State.

Still, Ferris appears to be in solid shape. Had the Bulldogs been defeated by Michigan Tech and the Huskies had gone on to win the tournament ... things could have gotten scary for the NCAA Division II Tournament selections.

The Bulldogs of head coach Bill Sall have put themselves in a solid position to make the NCAA tournament regardless of the outcome of Sunday's game.

However, Ferris would love to claim that victory and emerge as undisputed champions of the GLIAC.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Ferris Set For GLIAC Tournament

Ferris State University
is set to take on Michigan Tech University in the semifinals of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament in Big Rapids at Jim Wink Arena on Saturday afternoon.

The Bulldogs and Huskies play at 1 p.m. and that will be followed by the other semifinal between the University of Findlay and Wayne State University at 3 p.m.

These should be two excellent semifinal round contests as the Bulldogs take on the Huskies who are coming in off a stunning upset of No. 3 seed Grand Valley State University in Allendale (the teams were re-seeded in the semifinals round).

Ferris will have to bring its "A" game against a Michigan Tech team that is well-coached and big inside.

In the other semifinal, an excellent matchup is on tap as the Oilers and Warriors will battle. This is a contest between two well-coached teams that go at it hard and get after it defensively.

Below are Wednesday's quarterfinal-round results:

#1 Ferris State def. #8 Saginaw Valley State, 80-61
#2 Findlay def. #7 Lake Superior State, 73-56
#6 Michigan Tech def. #3 Grand Valley State, 74-72
#4 Wayne State def. #5 Hillsdale, 79-62

Below are Saturday's semifinal games:
Hosted by Ferris State University - Jim Wink Arena

1 p.m. - #1 Ferris State vs. #4 Michigan Tech
3 p.m. - #2 Findlay vs. #3 Wayne State

The two winners meet in Sunday's championship game at 2 p.m. (ET)

Note: Teams were reseeded after the quarterfinals
