A solid year of athletics at Ferris State University has revealed itself in the form of a fifth-place finish in the President's Trophy standings for the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
The Bulldogs finished with 112.5 points in the race for supremecy among athletics programs in the GLIAC. Ferris, however, finished just 4.5 points behind the University of Findlay for fourth place. So, it's a good sign for the Bulldogs as an athletic program.
As expected, Grand Valley State University won the trophy for the 13th year in a row as its dominance in the league continues.

SOFTBALL: Ferris Fights Hard; Has Season End In GLIAC Tourney

MIDLAND - Ferris State University's softball season came to an end on day two of the 2011 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament.
The Bulldogs tried valiantly to fight their way out of the loser's bracket, but fell short as a 3-0 Saturday loss to Ashland University officially ended their season at 24-23 overall.
Ferris began its day with a 5-2 win over Northwood University and followed that up with a 4-2 victory over Wayne State University to set the stage for a rematch with Ashland.
The Eagles, however, were as tougher as ever and ended Ferris' season with a 3-0 victory in the day's finale in Midland at NU's Fisher Stadium.
Ferris showed a lot of character fighting back out of the loser's bracket and nearly fighting its way all the way through a nearly improbable three-game sweep on Saturday afternoon.
It was a valiant effort on the team's part.

HOCKEY: Pletsch Named CCHA Commissioner
In news that is not really a big surprise, the Central Collegiate Hockey Association this week (on May 3) officially announced that Fred Pletsch has been named the new

commissioner of the league.
He replaces Tom Anastos, who resigned from the position to become the head men's ice hockey coach at Michigan State University.
Pletsch previously had served as the CCHA's associate commissioner, from 2008 through 2011 and as its director of communications, from 2001 through 2008.
With the resignation of Anastos, Pletsch was named interim commissioner and the removal of the interim tag is really not a big surprise with Pletsch's knowledge of the game, of the league and his credentials in general.

SOFTBALL: GLIAC Tournament Bracket Set For Weekend (Locations Altered)
Due to flooding in Midland that has made the softball fields at Emerson Park unplayable, the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference has moved its softball tournament to the campuses of Northwood University and Saginaw Valley State University this weekend.
It's perhaps not the most ideal situation, but it is probably the best that can be done under the current circumstances that the conference faces.
The updated conference tournament bracket is listed below. Of note, Ferris State will begin the tournament facing Saginaw Valley in Midland (at Northwood) beginning at 12 p.m. on Friday to begin the double-elimination tournament.
