GENERAL ATHLETICS: Willie Bouyer Leadership Awarded To Matt DeHart

BIG RAPIDS - Senior forward Matt DeHart (Greenville) of the Ferris State University men's basketball team has been chosen as the recipient of the FSU Athletics Department's Willie Bouyer Leadership Award for the 2010-11 campaign.

The Willie Bouyer Leadership Award, which is regarded as the most prestigious of the FSU Athletics Department's four annual major honors, is named in memory of Ferris State's first All-America football student-athlete Willie Bouyer. Bouyer was tragically killed in his hometown of Detroit in 1977. The recipient is chosen by a FSU Athletics Department committee.

Candidates for the award are judged on their strong inspirational leadership and dedication to fellow Ferris State student-athletes. The nominees also should be involved outside of athletics in other college and community activities along with participating on a varsity athletics team for at least two years. The Willie Bouyer Leadership Award was reinstated upon the conclusion of the 2002-03 season following a seven-year absence.

"Matt is an exemplary young man, a natural leader and is very deserving of this award," said FSU Athletics Director Perk Weisenburger. "He was a big part of the success our men's basketball team achieved in making it to the "Sweet 16" this season plus he was a fixture on our Student-Athlete Advisory Board. Matt is a wonderful choice as the recipient of this leadership award in the name of Willie Bouyer."

A former walk-on, DeHart concluded his FSU career as one of the program's all-time bests in three-pointers made and three-point percentage. He tallied nine points and four rebounds a game this past season while making the third-most three's (78) in school single-season history.

The 6-4, 185-pound DeHart also picked up Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division Player of the Week honors this season and finished the year as one of the league leaders in three-pointers made and three-point percentage.Behind the play of DeHart and three other members of the senior class, the Ferris State men concluded the 2010-11 season by reaching the NCAA Division II Sweet Sixteen and the Midwest Regional Championship Game in Louisville, Ky. The Bulldogs also captured the GLIAC North Division Championship and hosted the GLIAC Tournament Semifinals and Finals this past season. Ferris State earned runner-up laurels in both the conference and NCAA regional tournaments.

In addition to his success on the court, DeHart has also been active off the floor by serving as a member of FSU's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. He was also involved as a student-athlete representative on the selection committee to hire a new athletics director last summer and has served as a basketball camp coordinator for Eagle Village. The two-time (2009-10 & 2010-11) GLIAC All-Academic Team honoree was a four-year letterwinner for the Bulldogs.

DeHart is the third men's basketball player in school history to receive the Willie Bouyer Leadership Award, following in the footsteps of Kurt Stevens (1985-86) and Jeffrey Shanahan (2005-06).The other 2010-11 nominees for the Willie Bouyer Leadership Award included Zach Redmond of the men's ice hockey team, men's golf team member Joe Brown along with Jack Swan of the men's tennis squad.

Former Ferris State University hockey assistant coach Jamie Russell has accepted an assistant coaching position at Providence College.

"We are extremely excited to add Coach Russell to our staff," said Providence head coach Nate Leaman. "Coach Russell has great knowledge of the game and a tremendous amount of experience in recruiting, developing players and building programs to win. He is an excellent communicator and teacher and we welcome him to Friartown."

Russell was an assistant coach at Ferris from 1994-99 under current head coach Bob Daniels.

FOOTBALL: Porter Doing Work On The Diamond In Midland

Ferris State University football placekicker Catlin Porter has skills beyond what he does on the gridiron.

The Midland Explorers men's fastpitch team getting ready for its home invitational at Emerson Park in Midland in preparation for next year's International Softball Congress World Tournament (also in Midland), according to the Midland Daily News.

Added into that mix are three young players -- outfielders Shea Bryant and Catlin Porter, along with third baseman Jason Hoisington. Bryant is in his third year with the Explorers, while Porter and Hoisington accompanied the team to the ASA National Championships last August.

After playing baseball at Midland High, Porter took up softball last season and has enjoyed the transition. The Ferris State junior also won the place-kicking job last fall for the Bulldogs' football team. Hoisington and Porter both played last season for Carey.

"Shea is a Midland guy, and we're expecting good things out of him this season," said Sauve. "These three guys give us a lot of speed, which has been lacking in past. We're going to let the veterans get on (base) and then bring the young guys in to run for them. When you have good pitching, it keeps the run total down and hopefully, the speed will give us the runs we need. Also, it is nice to have some Midland players on the roster."

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Ferris' 2011-12 Schedule Now Posted

Ferris State University has announced its women's tennis schedule for the upcoming 2011-12 season.

While the start of the season is still a little way down the line, it is nonetheless a time to begin to look ahead to the fall campaign for the women's tennis squad of head coach Alex Palladino, who is pictured.

Once again, the Bulldogs will look to battle with the likes of Grand Valley State University, Northwood University and others for supremacy in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Last year, Ferris showed that it had the talent to compete with some of the top
teams in the conference, region and nation with its efforts on the court.

A year ago, the Bulldogs had a strong record of 20-5 overall and 9-2 in the standings of the GLIAC. That's good, but Ferris will hope for more as it looks ahead to the fall of 2011.

Mavis also is a standout softball player and strong prospect who the report says had a softball scholarship offer from a Division I school.

Who knows ... maybe Mavis will join Lindsey Pettit as a two-sport college star playing basketball and softball.

The video is from Fox 28 in South Bend, Ind.

VOLLEYBALL: Ferris Announces 2011 Fall Schedule

Ferris State University has released its 2011 volleyball schedule and it looks as if the competition will, once again, be tough.

The Bulldogs, as has become tradition, open up with competition at its own Ferris State Invitational Sept. 2 and 3 in Big Rapids. Coach Tia Brandel-Wilhelm's squad will take on Drury (Mo.) and Wisconsin-Parkside on the first day and then Southern Indiana and California (Pa.) on day two of the event. Those will be important matches with three of the four opponents being in-region competition for Ferris.

"We're excited about our schedule, which will be a very tough," Brandel-Wilhelm said. "Our conference should be one of the most competitive it's been in several years as a number of teams could win the league title. We also face a number of quality regional opponents at our own season-opening tournament and at the GLVC/GLIAC Crossover Tournament in mid-October."

More regional competition awaits the Bulldogs in mid-October as Ferris participates in the regional crossover tournament in Aurora, Ill. Those regional games, as will be the case with the earlier ones, will be important as regional rankings shape what teams will qualify for the NCAA Division II Tournament.

Ferris finished 17-10 overall last season with a 12-6 record in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference standings.
